What works

Dragon Naturally Speaking both installs and runs, but it is VERY fussy in both categories.

On the install, it requires a 32-bit wine prefix and Windows 7 at least. It uses dotnet45, which doesn't install (wine defaults to mono). So you have to install NatSpeak, use wine uninstaller to get rid of mono, and then do a "repair install." Then NatSpeak installs its own dotnet45.

As you do the install, don't select ANY option that might require the program to do any unnecessary work.

So you've installed it. That's the easy part.

NatSpeak does not run unless you have saved user data from a prior NatSpeak 12.5 install and have put it here:

.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Application Data/Nuance/NaturallySpeaking13/Users

Then NatSpeak will start, much like a wind-up Model T Ford, with a lot of grunting and groaning.

The first three times it will crash while it tries to load some obligatory pop-up windows. When you finally get the windows open, decline all offers and close them.

Then NatSpeak will run like a racehorse with phenomenal accuracy for over a half hour, and then it will crash. Save your work often.

Sometimes NatSpeak tries to take up all my machine's processor power. I have a script that kills all open wine processes. I run that, and try again. It usually works on the second try, sometimes on the third.

I use NatSpeak every day and love it. But it takes patience.

What does not

Of course creating or training a new user does not work.

Nat Speak can only communicate with other wine programs. However sometimes the program will use the command Show Dictation Box with an out-of-wine program. I've used it with Emacs. This is expected wine behavior and not a flaw.

Additional Comments

Right now I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you saved a really good user profile from NatSpeak 12.5 and plan to use the same microphone.
