(I'm sorry for spelling-, grammar- and/or wording errors) Installation: ============= OS: Ubuntu 14.04.3 amd64 with Unity 7.2.6 I installed Wine 1.8 using "ppa:wine/wine-builds". The only setting I changed in winecfg was to enable virtual desktop emulation and set it to my monitor resolution. During the installation process the game installs a few libraries (which seem to be listed in "/ReqSoftware.xml"). Gameplay: ========= Sometimes when switching to another workspace some keys might get stuck (usually Ctrl, Alt and/or Shift in my case). To unstuck them the keys can be simply pressed once when switching back to the game. For advanced users: (probably only affects Unity users) [Be careful, a misconfiguration could have very bad side-effects such as a non-working desktop - be sure you know what you are doing.] To be able to use keyboard shortcuts using the Alt-key one has to install compizconfig-settings-manager (it's in the default repositories) and disable the keyboard shortcuts containing the Alt-key in "Desktop->Ubuntu Unity Plugin". (This is especially useful since I couldn't find a way to rebind Alt-F10 to enable/disable the lantern.) Miscellaneous in-game settings/tips: ==================================== Disabling "Options->Adv Graphics->Shadows->Environment Stencil Shadows" greatly reduced lag in some houses in Bree. In "Options->Adv Graphics->Display": Setting the Refresh Rate to 60Hz and enabling "Sync To Refresh Rate" decreased the CPU usage of the game in the Character-Selection-screen and in areas that do not need many system-esources to render (see "Notes"). If only the Refresh Rate is set ("Sync To Refresh Rate" not set) it seems that the game ignores this setting (I sometimes got 90+ FPS in a few areas). Notes: ====== The game seems to use only one CPU core. It seems that the game runs out of memory and crashes in some regions (e.g. in Rohan) with highest graphics settings enabled - it crashes when it reaches ~4GB virtual memory usage. It seems that the game *should* support more than 4GB RAM even though it's a 32bit application (some forum posts mention memory leaks where the game uses ~8GB of RAM), so the game would probably work longer if it could address more memory. (I tried running the game with wine64, but it still crashed at ~4GB). This however isn't a wine-only problem since there are many forum posts of Windows users complaining about memory leaks. (see (I simply searched the forums for "64bit crash")) Conclusion: =========== I gave this game a Platinum rating since it installs without problems. The performance could be better, but the game is very well playable. Problems with the Alt-key probably exist only in Unity and can be easily fixed (not a Wine problem anyway). Stuck keys are not really a problem since they can be unstuck easily (I'm not sure if this has to do with Wine). The described Problems in the launcher settings probably won't be noticed by most users since there aren't any important settings in there. The Problem is probably caused by an error in lotro-root-dir/en/Launcher.qss: When I change "QCheckBox:enabled {color: white; }" to "QCheckBox:enabled {color: green; }" both the ticks and the descriptions of the options become green (and therefore visible). However, the game detects the modified file and won't let you play unless the file is updated (which sets the colour to white again). The Wine devs and the whole community did an awesome job, one reason less to use Windows! :-D

Update on Out Of Memory errors when the game reaches ~4GB of RAM usage (as of 2016-1-18)

It seems that memory is freed more often when a newer version of Windows is set in the settings (e.g. Vista or Windows 7) - it took more effort to crash the game than in XP: I had to set the texture cache size to the maximum and quick-travel around which seems to increase memory usage (since the memory apparently isn't always freed quickly after travelling).

I don't know why this is the case, but I guess that the game handles memory differently on different Windows versions - I know that the game enables some options on newer Windows versions, for example DirectX11 settings (which I have not tested yet), so I guess it is possible that this somehow affects memory management too...

"We are aware of a conflict between Win XP and Awesonium (which is what we use for the store browser). Unfortunately as Microsoft no longer supports Win XP there is little we can do to fix this with that OS. We can only recommend upgrading to a newer Operating System as the lack of support from Microsoft on XP means you will start running into problems in other programs as well if you haven't already.

We will be updating our minimum specs soon to reflect this."

She subsequently posted
that a new version of Awesomonium would be included in an upcoming update, probably in update 18, due shortly.

I would recommend that folks read the recent postings by Vyvanne and Frelon on February 23 and 26, they cover what anyone with a background in computing has been thinking.

I have been collecting them and posting them on the WIKI:

If one reads between the lines, it is obvious that the Data Center move -- i e. from old 32-bit windows XP based hardware to new 84-bit ?Linux? based hardware has been more than slightly traumatic.

While there are no absolute details available, it is obvious to those of us who have been through this kind of process in our own jobs, that Turbine was blind-sided by the impact of this up-grade and move.

LOTRO is an old piece of software. It dates from roughly 2005 (It went live in 2007). It is STILL a 32-bit application written when XP was the name of the game. The game has changed, but LOTRO has not. It is a 32-bit application running in a 64-bit world.

Fresno's comments on the 23rd, while extremely generic, give a good idea what has ben happening.

As of update 18 (today), it is fixed. The In-game store works again.

As of the hotfix game now crashes upon trying to load the store without an error report.

I checked the sys.log and it's an RT Watchdog Timeout that's doing it, but how to fix it I don't know.

I know it worked after the update Wednesday. I didn't know they did a hotfix after that. I know I could access the store Thursday Night into very earlier Friday morning, but it no longer worked as of around 1 pm Friday.

May I ask you where this sys.log file is located? (Not that I think I could help, I'm just interested...)

The only log file indicating a problem I found was "debug.log" located in the installation directory of the game, there I found the following messages:

Unless windows has a sys.log file which I doubt since iirc its only included in their server OSes. He must mean the sys.log in linux. Its located in /var/log

I was referring to Linux, and I should have put syslog instead of sys.log and /var/log is where it's located.The error apparently is caused an error causing the rtkit package in Linux to terminate Lotro and probably the wine service as well. rtkit is a package which has something to do with program operations in real time. I've noticed for the last several weeks anyway there is usually some hesitation from when the Store box is drawn and the content actually appears inside that box. I suppose that delay could cause the timeout error. The error doesn't happen immediately when the box appears, but seems to occur about when the content should appear.

I see. I tried running LOTRO in PlayOnLinux in a 32bit prefix and before I installed p11-kit-modules:i386 I didn't get any messages in syslog or kern.log during crashes.

After installing it I get the following messages in syslog:
rtkit-daemon: Demoting known real-time threads.
rtkit-daemon: Demoted 0 threads.

It seems that on my machine it's not rtkit-daemon who is making the game crash...

There was no "hot fix."

The systems were brought down for maintenance and apparently a Launcher patch (but no relase notes were provided) on Wednesday 24 February.

On Friday, Vyvanne made several postings including this excerpt:

"And yes feedback if you see improvements is helpful as well. It lets us know if we are on the right track. For example it would be good to know if you have seen any improvement since Wed. Last week vs this week since we restarted the servers. We are investigating if we have a degradation over time issue. We know the login server issue presents after it reaches a thresh hold of time so we are resetting those before the weekend to prevent weekend interruptions while we work on a longer term fix. We would like to see if the game servers have a similar issue. If they do then there should be an improvement in gameplay this weekend vs last weekend, but if you are also in the group of folks having ISP route issues, you might not notice."

I would note also -- the Store is a complete third-party situation.
It is operated by Xsolla and, as far as I know, it's display is completely by Awesomium, not the game-engine.

All I know is that they announced a "hot fix" in game before servers was brought down. Nevermind that though. Its not important. I guess Xsolla did some friggin update again that broke the store ffor non-windows users (a friend has the same problem on mac).

As much as it sucks, but I am glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this. After an update (or maintenance) I have the same problem, whereas before it worked fine. As a paying subscriber to the game I hope there'll be a fix for this soon. :-/

This is still an issue. Does anyone have an idea at least whether a workaround is possible or if we just have to wait for them to change something on their end? I can't use my turbine points at all until there's a solution.

The store can sometimes render almost completely but then it crashes the client.

They are doing an update to the store with the next patch. Dont know if that will fix the problem for linux users.

The store continues to work fine on the Mac Client.

One thing which appears to be true with the PC client -- the store apparently only works with DX9.

dx9 is the only option for running it in wine, so I am assuming you mean in a native Windows environment. Surely there would be more attention given to if it only worked with dx9 for all users.

Yes, I was specifically referring to the native Windows situation.

However, this apparently has to do with the Graphics Settings in the in-game Options.

I Don't know if it is possible to specify something other than DX9 when running WINE, even though DX9 is the only mode supported by WINE. I know that if you "select optimal" it will not pick anything else, but don't know about manual selection.
