Installation requires a workaround (see below) but otherwise completes successfully. The updater and all major game features work correctly, including joystick support and Japanese text input using the host IME.
What does not
There are a few graphical glitches, most noticeably that character face polygons can separate from each other when characters are talking. The built-in updater's background music stops after one loop instead of continuing to play for the duration of the update. I observed a text input bug in which an extra Japanese character was added to text I typed into the chat window, but this resolved itself when I upgraded from the free trial to the retail version.
What was not tested
All major game features were tested.
Requires winetricks: d3dx9 ie8 quartz winhttp wininet wmp10 xact_jun2010 - The game crashes on startup without native d3dx9. - ie8 is required for the launcher's login window to display. - winhttp and wininet are required for the IE8 installer to complete successfully. - Without quartz and wmp10, the game freezes when trying to play a movie. - Without wmv9vcm.dll (see below), the game skips movies but does not freeze. In order to play movies, you need to extract wmv9vcm.dll from Microsoft's KB2845142 (use cabextract; download from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=39466), copy it to %SYSTEM32%, and add the following registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32] "vidc.WMV3"="wmv9vcm.dll" The installer fails in a 32-bit WINEPREFIX, but some of the winetricks commands fail in a 64-bit WINEPREFIX. To get around this, run the installer in a 64-bit prefix (does not require any DLL overrides, though the installer will install DirectX from the Microsoft redistributable installer if you haven't already installed it from winetricks in that prefix) and install the game to "C:\Program Files" instead of "C:\Program Files (x86)". When the installer completes, move the "C:\Program Files\SquareEnix" into the Program Files directory of your target (32-bit) prefix, and copy the HKLM\Software\SquareEnix registry key to the target prefix.
