What was not tested

I have only played the game for about 8 hours, so it's possible I will run into issues. But no issues yet!

Additional Comments

I am running the Origin version. Origin is a pain like no other to get working, but once I got Origin working the game ran without issue.

It's possible that some of the work-arounds nessesary to get Origin working are important for getting the game running? If so it might be worth reading my how-to on getting Origin running.

Launch problem
by Tjalfe on Thursday January 3rd 2019, 2:46
Hi,

Using PlayonLinux I've installed origin. I've then installed Sims 4 but when I launch the program it only shows a white background with the EA logo, it seems to have frozen. There are no error messages and it is easy to exit the game using escape. The game should be up to date and the demo for the game seems to run fine. Further, origin has been disabled in game. Does anyone have a clue to what could be wrong?
RE: Launch problem
by Jenn on Friday January 25th 2019, 17:51
Hi, I had the same problem. I finally make it work by installing wine developer version using the winehq repository instead of the version ubuntu provides. I have disabled origin in game from the game too and make sure that AFTER installation you change wine to windows 7 inside PlayonLinux. Finally, check that the folder that contains origin doesn't have a lock. If it has it you need to change that by granting all the permissions to edit the folder, not only accessing it. If you need more help write me to jenn.paniaguadelgado@gmail.com

Set api-ms-win-core-path-l1-1-0.dll as Native only (winecfg). That's all I done.

Hi Anthony,

How far are you into the install process before you're getting the problem? Does Origin run okay?

by Dick Thomas on Saturday June 23rd 2018, 2:49
Hello Nick,

I tried the GUI and command line. both resulted in the same error

so around 3 am I wrote a fake vc++redist.exe in C++ and swapped it out with the real ones Origin was
failing to install and that seems to have done the trick. :)
No long able to install Sims4
by Dick Thomas on Friday June 22nd 2018, 16:19
Hello,

Last week I was able to play the sims and then I reinstalled my OS due to a change in hard drive usage
and now, No matter how hard I try I can not get the sims to install.

I keep getting the error about VC++ not being installed even after I've installed it via winetricks.
Has something changed with the last Origin update last week?

I'm Running Debian X86_64
with the KDE Desktop
I was using wine version 3.10

I've also tried Neon , Fedora and Kubuntu without success

Hi Dick,

When you installed VC++ did you use the winetricks GUI or command line? I've found the GUI sometimes doesn't work as well as the command line.

If you used the GUI, try running the command "winetricks vcrun2010 vcrun2013 vcrun2017"

I'm currently at work right now, I'll be able to mess around with it when I get off, to see if I get the same problems on a reinstall, and if I can find a solution.

Thanks,
Nick.
Exactly the same install one origin in-game works the other it doesn't
by Robert Watts on Tuesday September 5th 2017, 9:10
To follow up on my previous comment. I installed a fresh xubuntu on two different computers. Then used play on Linux to install origin. Using the EXACT same instructions. On one pc I can load Sims 4 with origin in-game enabled on the other pc I cannot. What are some things I should check to help with trouble shooting?
Origin In Game
by Robert Watts on Sunday September 3rd 2017, 7:17
Do we know why Origin In-game doesn't work?

Is there a bug filed for this and anyone looking for a fix? I just see everyone saying to turn it off, but no real reason why it doesn't function.

If I know where to start, I can have a look at helping to fix.
Regarding vc++ 2013 issue.
by Albert Jasinski on Monday August 21st 2017, 3:34
If you have a trouble installing Sims4 from origin app installer and all the time getting error about VC++ 2013 installer failure.
You have two options:

1.
Installer is failing because Origins installer doesn't care that you already have vc2013 installed in your wineprefix and trying to install it again (witch can't be done). Original vcredist_x86.exe for vc2013 returns different value than 0 (because its failing).
In this case you need to find dummy windows executable that will do nothing, just return "0" in result of run.
Than you need to swap origin's vcredist_x86.exe for your dummy executable in
/drive_c/Program Files/Origin Games/The Sims 4/__Installer/vc/vc2013/redist/
Than try to install Sims4.

2.
Second option (because I couldn't find dummy executable) was to copy already done installation from Windows.
If you have any windows (I used VirtualBox) you may install sims4 there and than just copy /The Sims 4/ folder from windows disk to your wineprefix (/drive_c/Program Files/Origin Games/).
Than you need to export some reg keys from windows and import them into wine (using regedit):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Maxis\The Sims 4]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameUX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{48EBEBBF-B9F8-4520-A3CF-89A730721917}] - remember that string {48EBEBBF-B9F8-4520-A3CF-89A730721917} may be different on your installation and you will need to find it somewhere in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Maxis\The Sims 4])
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Origin Games]

After importing all these into your wine, you need to check all imported keys looking for strings with disk locations to update them to correct values for your wine's "Origin Games" location.

After that you may start origin and Sims 4 should be visible as installed.
Than you will need probably to do one more thing - open Sims 4 settings (from right click menu on sims 4 box in origin), and switch off origin in game option (that makes Sims 4 to crash).
Now you may play your Sims4

Thank you for these hints.
I managed to install it using the 1st option and without any dummy exectable. :)

In order to do it this way (I'm using fresh wine-4.9), download the game to the point, where it starts "FINALIZATION" and crash, then:
1) Keep the Origin client opened.
2) Move to the vc2013 directory (mine was "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Origin Games/The Sims 4/__Installer/vc/vc2013/redist").
3) Run the following commands inside of the vc2013/redist: 'mv vcredist_x86.exe vcredist_x86.exe.orig; mv vcredist_x64.exe vcredist_x64.exe.orig; ln -s ../../vc2010sp1/redist/vcredist_x* .' - we will simply cheat that installer by using the same vc2010sp1 executables.
Then you should see output in the directory like this:
{
vcredist_x64.exe -> ../../vc2010sp1/redist/vcredist_x64.exe
vcredist_x64.exe.orig
vcredist_x86.exe -> ../../vc2010sp1/redist/vcredist_x86.exe
vcredist_x86.exe.orig
}
4) When the above is done, get back to the opened Origin client and start the "FINALIZATION" again. It should pass on beautifully now (at least it did on my side).

Beware, if you close the Origin client and move to the steps (2,3,4), there is some weird chance, that the client will overwrite those executable files with original ones. Hence the 1st step comment, to keep it open.
Getting Origin to work.
by Nick Olson on Saturday July 22nd 2017, 21:12
If you are having problems installing Origin, or can't connect to EA servers, you can follow the instructions posted by Luca Weiss:

Download www.dm.origin.com/download/legacy (legacy OriginThinSetup.exe).
Create a fresh wineprefix (32-bit).
Run the installer and leave the default options.
When Origin launches it will tell you that "Your update could not be completed.".
Download origin-a.akamaihd.net/Origin-Client-Download/origin/live/OriginUpdate_9_12_0_34172.zip and put the contents into your_wine_prefix/drive_c/Program\ Files/Origin/ , so that that folder contains a Origin.exe file.
You can then start this Origin.exe and log in.

After this you should be able to install Sims 4 without any problems.
RE: Getting Origin to work.
by Jenniffer on Thursday May 24th 2018, 19:54
Hello.

What do you mean by "Run the installer and leave the default options"? is that on Play on Linux?
RE: Getting Origin to work.
by Nick Olson on Thursday May 24th 2018, 20:04
Hi Jenniffer,

These are older instructions. If you set wine to "Windows XP" and use Origin's legacy installer, it should install without any workarounds.
Are you getting an error with the installer?
RE: Getting Origin to work.
by Jenniffer on Thursday May 24th 2018, 20:22
It finally work for me. Thanks! The only problem I am having right now is that when I launched Origin it keeps telling me that I need to be online to be able to login in.. but I am online.
RE: Getting Origin to work.
by Nick Olson on Thursday May 24th 2018, 22:00
Have you been able to log in at all since the install?
RE: Getting Origin to work.
by Jenniffer on Friday May 25th 2018, 11:50
I use play on linux and it let me log in and download the game. However, when I tried to play the app crashes.

Go to Origin's settings and make sure "Origin-in-Game" is disabled. That's usually the cause of game crashes.
EA Activation Servers
by madmerlyn on Monday March 13th 2017, 9:34
I've been hammering on this one for a week and can't seem to find a solution. I've got Origin installed and running, but if I try to install any game, including Sims 4 and Sims 4 Create a Sim demo when the app launches, even in Offline mode and with Origin disabled in game, it pops up and says "Unable to connect to EA Activation servers to activate your game".

Having the same issue. Did you find any solutions?
Origin won't start
by Stefan on Sunday February 5th 2017, 9:11
Tried installing Origin via OriginSetup.exe as well as OriginThinSetup.exe. On neither of the two I can run the Origin application. I tried to follow the hints in test result for "The Sims 4". As described I used winecfg to change the Windows flavour to Win7. I'm not sure whether I use wine-staging-nine, how can I check? And I can't find a file named Options.txt thus not able to set fullscreen to 0. Any help appreciated.

Origin keeps crashing
by Bob on Monday December 26th 2016, 11:08
I have a Linux laptop with stretch on. I got The Sims 4 and realised that I needed Origin to play. So I installed Origin booted it on Wine x64 bit on both Origin and The Sims 4.

Whenever I turn on "Origin in game" it crashes.

I need "Origin in game" to use Get to work Expansion Pack.

Please help
RE: Origin keeps crashing
by Nick Olson on Friday January 6th 2017, 2:57
Hi Bob,
I'm sorry for the late response. Origin In-Game shouldn't be needed for DLC. Try turning it off, if your DLC doesn't work try going to your game library and right click on Sims 4 then select "Repair Game". Origin will probably crash after this is completed, just restart it and Sims DLC should work.
