Use a clean 64bit Wineprefix! In a 32bit prefix the game will crash about every hour. Install directx9 with winetricks, otherwise you will get a black screen (Bug 37676). Apply the 4GB patch as mentioned in the comments below. Before first launch delete "drive_c/users/Application Data/Ubisoft" and create "Engine.ini" in the game directory, next to the exe, with following content: 1 9 The game must be run for its installation directory to work. Tested using the Venice Addon (Addon.exe).

HOWTO

In order to get the game working you must enable DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 10:

  • Locate the Engine.ini file (drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Related Designs/ANNO 1404/ or drive_c/users/%username%/Application\ Data/Ubisoft/Anno1404/Config/ )
  • Edit or add a key named DirectXVersion and set the value to 9
  • The file should look similar to this: http://pastebin.com/7E5jSXnA

The game should run flawlessly then...

Directx 10

Shouldn't it be possible to run the game with directx 10.
I've tried it today with wine 3.8. The game starts but without graphics. I can hear the music an get the mousepointer the rest of the screen is black.
Setting the directxversion back to 9 solved the problem.

Out of memory (solved)

After a while the game just stopped while playing, this was caused by a memory issue.
This fixed it for me.

1. Download the 4GB patch from
www.ntcore.com/files/4gb_patch.zip

2. Go to the game folder:
cd '/home/[username]/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Anno 1404 Gold Edition'

3. Extract the 4gb_patch to the game folder.

4. Execute in your terminal (backup is automatically created):
wine 4gb_patch.exe Anno4.exe

5. Optional; patch the Venice Addon:
wine 4gb_patch.exe Addon.exe
