Can't get TaxAct to run at all
by Paul Gruver on Saturday March 12th 2016, 8:16
I am running "openSUSE Leap 42.1 (x86_64)" on an AMD-64 machine, and using Wine 1.8.1. I've tried using both a 32-bit and a 64-bit WINE environment. The application opens up, OK, but then freezes, I can't even close the application.

Are there any configuration tricks I'm missing?

This is doubly frustrating, because TaxAct 2014 worked perfectly!

Couple of questions:
1. Did you install IE8? TaxAct requires it.
2. Did you try running in desktop mode rather than window manager mode? Sometimes TaxAct opens windows which can only be seen in desktop mode.

OK, I went into winetricks, and gave TaxAct a 1024x768 virtual desktop. That seems to have fixed my problems. Everything seems to work, although the Q&A doesn't seem to remember where I was. The data I entered is all there, and in the right places.

Thx.

How do I run it in desktop mode?
TaxAct2015 did work a couple of weeks ago, and now it starts but I can't click on it and can only kill it. So I suspect for some reason (maybe Ubuntu updates in the meantime) now it would only run in desktop mode. So here is my question: "How do I run it in desktop mode?"
Thanks

Updates are possible under Wine but you have to set Wine to "Virtual Desktop" mode; for some reason the update system does not work under window manager control mode.
taxact15 e-file may not be possible with wine 1.8
by Zarsh Mogon on Friday February 26th 2016, 8:10
I tried tp step through the e-file process and at one point it opens IE8. IE8 comes up blank so it is hard to tell what that step does. If I close IE8 it looks like it resumes the e-file process but I don't know if something critical should have happened when it opened IE8. I can open IE8 independently of Taxact and see that some simple websites load but the taxact website does not.

E-file works OK for me on Wine 1.8. You do not need to use IE to e-file successfully.

OK thanks Ian - good feedback.
When e-filing under wine there was a pop-up with the IE icon that was blank.
From testing e-filing on a real windows 7 machine (not wine) I could see that if it had IE8 installed there was a script error pop-up and an out of memory runtime error pop up. With IE9 installed (on win7) then Taxact goes to the step where it asks you to verify your identity for the IRS.
When running from wine I jump past the "E-Filing - Verify your identity" screen and never see it. Are you seeing that screen?

Many thanks
Zarsh

Are you talking about the screen where it asks for your driver license information? I skipped that one.

Otherwise, I'm not sure which screen you're referring to, and at this point my return has already been filed so I can't reproduce the steps.

Hi Ian,
No worries, I realised you can jump past the tax id verification screen ok and just verify later with previous years results. Appreciate you telling me it was possible as it spurred me on to persevere.

Cheers
Zarsh
