What works

  • The installer
  • Activation
  • The main program
  • The timeline
  • The preview
  • Render As (CPU only)
  • Importing supported videos
  • All the video FX/Media Generators/Transitions
  • The Explorer
  • Saving and loading projects
  • Making an entire video from start to finish works without any hiccups

What does not

  • GPU rendering doesn't work
  • The installer says dotnet3.5sp1 is corrupted when it tries to download it
  • Crashes at "Creating file I/O manager" when opening the program
  • CUDA

Workarounds

The installer can't download dotnet 3.5 sp1 properly so in order to install it you have to use winetricks with the command winetricks --force dotnet35sp1

The application will always crash when the launcher reaches "Creating file I/O manager". To fix it go to where you installed vegas pro and either delete the file "FileIOSurrogate.exe" or rename it to something else. (This also works on other vegas versions I tried out).

For certain outputs in the render as menu it will give you an error saying "An error occurred while created the media file". To fix it either choose another output or customize the template and change the encode mode to "Render using CPU only".

What was not tested

  • Capture Video
  • Extract Audio from CD
  • Upload to YouTube
  • Burn disc
  • Export to PSP

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

Some file types/formats won't work without quicktime installed. winetricks quicktime76

Vegas randomly crashes on windows meaning in wine vegas will also unexpectedly crash so save periodically.

I used the 32-bit version of vegas in a 64-bit wine prefix. I also tested in a 32-bit wine prefix and it gives the same results. I have not tested the 64-bit version at all.

Previous test results on vegas products mention you should go to "ErrorReportConfig.xml" and disable it. Vegas runs fine without it but if you do have issues you should try this but in my testing I have seen no difference. One note is that when vegas does crash with the error report disable it will show a message from wine saying it crashed which can show details about the crash and help you troubleshoot.

I recommend you make an entirely different wine prefix for vegas for more stability.

Mono doesn't work at all under vegas.
