HowTo / Notes

Troubleshooting Audio and language pack install issues

For some, such as myself, rosetta stone works out of the box on a 64bit prefix and using pulseaudio so long as volume is set just right. However, many others are having issues with sound or the Program simply not adding or running language packs. If this is you, you may want to try the following :

  • create a 32 bit wineprefix
    • WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX="path_to_wineprefix" winecfg
      • path_to_wineprefix is the folder where everything goes. The default prefix is already at $HOME/.wine so you may want to use '$HOME/.wine32' for example
  • install Rosetta to new wineprefix
    • WINEPREFIX="path_to_wineprefix" wine start /unix "path_to_Rosetta_installer"
  • Run Winetricks to set ALSA env
    • WINEPREFIX="path_to_wineprefix" winetricks --gui
      • This will open winetricks tool from which you can set alsa as the sound server. There are other ways to to set alsa without winetricks should you not wish to install or use it.

P.S. I borrowed and slightly edited the work around posted in the comments by another user as they were fairly concise. So special thanks to "PE3GN9O" from whom I borrowed this. Also thank you to the person who submitted the test results that also mentioning this work around.
