The E-sports scene developing around the game over the years has gained tremendous popularity with the finals even being broadcasted on ESPN, DIsney and other mainstream platforms.

What works

- Installing

To install via BNet I believe the minimum needed is:

  • corefonts
  • vcrun2005
  • vcrun2008

I also went overboard and installed:

  • vcrun20*
  • ie8
  • dotnet40 & dotnet45
  • d3dx* (10/11/9)

- Updating via BNet

- Running the game & BNet Application:

Wine had CSMT enabled
Capture Mouse Enabled
Wine "Windows Version" as Windows 7

- I tested Arcade modes, and modes via the Game Browser. And I'm certain that all modes will work now. But you will be limited by your FPS and the mouse

Original Test w/o Capture Mouse:

Test with "Capture Mouse in Fullscreen":

What does not

- Re-binding of controls
In the video I show re-binding of crouch from Rcontrol to Lcontrol, but even after a "successful" rebinding notification in game, Rcontrol was still bound to crouch.

(I tested it right after, I went back into the settings and it still says Rcontrol)

There are serious FPS drops when you really start playing in 6v6.
It drops down to around 10-20 FPS. Which is nearly unplayable.

Issue: Running Overwatch in a Tiling Manager as windowed mode.

If you alt-tabbed or swapped windows, or even went from full-screen to windowed mode. The mouse would then get focus at X point and the game would treat that as the exact middle.
So your view would keep getting pulled, left/right/up/down making it impossible to play

Fix: Running the game in Borderless Windowed mode in full-screen enabled me to switch workspaces and still have a working Overwatch without mouse issues.

Issue: Changing resolutions. All the scaling of the displayed items were at the small/greater resolution, but the actual graphics were at the fullscreen resolution.
If you went from 1080 to 720 to find the exit button you had to go off to the left and higher (As all the buttons were smaller)

Fix: Exiting the game and re-opening opens the game in the correct resolution, with the correct scaling.

Issue: "Alt-Tabbing" whilst in full-screen mode. Results in a tiny 100x100px view of the game. Having to kill the game and re-load.

Fix: Change to Borderless Windowed & Restart. This enabled me to be able to switch between workstations.

Issue: Mouse precision.
When tracking horizontally the mouse stutters making it nearly impossible to play in a competitive environment.

Fix: Enable "Capture Mouse when in Fullscreen" in Wine (winecfg)

Note: While this fixes it dramatically, there is still a little bit of stutter. (See second Video)

What was not tested

- Purchase Shop Functionality, I went all the way to the payment section but didn't complete the purchase of new loot boxes. (Looked like it was going to work though, I'm nearly 100% certain it would have taken my money)

- No wayland functionality was tested. Purely X server. (Sorry Wayland folks)
