Poor performance
by F. Delente on Sunday March 9th 2008, 4:03
I installed Steam then the Half-life 2 demo on my linux laptop (easier than in windows XP :-).

However, even though I could play the linux clients for doom3 and Quake4 on this laptop with very good performance (about 50FPS in high mode, 1440x900 resolution), Half-life 2 demo is very jerky, and the outdoors give me about 3 FPS!

Is it normal, or else how can I improve performance?

Thanks.

What video card and drivers?
Wine still have performance issues with some features. Try to setting dxlevel to 81 (add "-dxlevel 81") to the game's command line.

My CPU is a double-core Turion64 2GHz, and my card is an nvidia GeForce 7600 Go 256MB.

As of today the demo doesn't work any more (BadAlloc error in the X server) so I can't try with -dxlevel 81...
Missing Voices in Game
by Gary on Monday October 29th 2007, 23:05
Hi,
I'm running under Gentoo and have tried various versions of wine over the last year but still have the one slightly annoying problem:

Some voices in the game are not heard:
- When you first arrive at the train station, there is a gentleman talking on a large screen. I know in windows he has a voice, but not yet in Wine.
- Radio Dialogue (I can see the caption but can't hear the voices)
- The Professor's voice when you first meet him via video

Has anyone else experienced this?

- I'm running under Alsa and all other voices and sounds appear to work.
- I haven't had success in trying OSS (since it's deprecated in the Kernel) or Alsa OSS emulation.
