Demo version of Half Life 2, only contains 2 chapters. Otherwise the same as full game. See Half-Life 2 for more information.
The game had no problem installing through Steam, but at first it would not run. After adding the option 'dxlevel 70' it did, and almost reasonably. The intro is choppy from time to time, and setting the sound driver to 'OSS' helps this somewhat. Textures and lighting will render correctly, not great but nothing stands out as wrong.
I've found the game to be playable when it is run as: WINEDEBUG=-all wine "C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 219 -dxlevel 70 -novid -windowed. I can save, load, and choose chapters (though limited within the demo)
I'm running this on a P4, 2.4 ghz system with 512 Mb RAM that has an nVidia 420 Go (32 Mb AGP) graphics card. Not screaming speed, but it can play hl2. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I have the directx9 dlls copied to my system32 directory (not for this game, I copied them to test Battlefield).
What does not
Some of the sounds, namely those coming from tv screens within the game, don't play. Other sounds and even music will, but not "on screen" sounds for some strange reason.
Trying to change the video configuration within the game will cause it to crash. Passing the option (windowed, resolution, dxlevel) through the command line is a way around this.
What was not tested
"We don't go to Ravenholm..." Sorry, I just don't like zombies.
Using a microphone (I'm not sure if you can in the demo) with the game wasn't tested.
Surprising that it works at all, let alone is playable. There is a large improvement over when I tried this last August.
