What works

"Everything" required to play the game when using the workarounds listed below (certain winetricks and setting the game to DX10 mode):

  • installation via Steam,
  • gameplay (2 full map rounds, looks like stable 60 FPS with occasional hiccups),
  • sound,
  • mouse/keyboard input,
  • low quality graphics (1280x720 resolution),
  • fullscreen and windowed modes

What does not

DX11 mode won't work. The performance is worse than when using Windows. The installation process is pretty long, as well as the startup time.

Add -dx10 to the launch options on Steam.

Install Steam in a 64 bit Wine prefix (see Steam AppDB page for instructions on how to install the Steam client)

Disable Steam overlay in Steam settings just to be sure.

Install the following winetricks before running the game:

corefonts steam dx3dx9_42 vcrun2008 vcrun2015 xact

If my instructions are unclear, check with other test results.

What was not tested

DX11 mode (it won't work), changing resolution and graphics quality to higher. Thorough navigation through game's lootbox system.

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

i5-4460, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 660, using 375.39 proprietary driver

The game requires thorough tinkering, thus it deserves only a Silver rating, even though it's very playable.

Running Killing Floor in DirectX 10 mode

Killing Floor 2 uses DirectX 11 features by default. If you're not inclined to use DXVK which translates D3D11 calls to Vulkan, and knowing WINE DirectX 11 support is not yet complete, you should use DirectX 10 mode instead. To enable this, launch Killing Floor 2 with the `-DX10` option.
