Selected Test Results

What works

  • Audio playback
    • mp3
    • flac
    • flac with cue partitions
    • ogg
  • Playback device selection
  • Library management
  • Theming and different visuals
  • Updating metadata from internet
  • Remote control plugin with Android app (network and firewall settings might have to be adjusted)
  • Auto DJ

What does not

Without some native Windows libraries the application will fail to start. See Workarounds.

Other issues include:

  • Any link to outside of the program (file managers, google, doesn't respond.
  • Album cover sizing does not work optimally
  • Pop-up notifications are hit and miss

The default installation requires some native Windows libraries and codecs:

winetricks dotnet40 mfc42 xmllite d3dx9 gdiplus vcrun2008 wmp10 windowscodecs

In addition:

  • Album covers do become visible if you scale the window appropriately. They don't downsample so on a 1280 x 1024 monitor, it fits, but only just.
  • Pop-up notifications are best disabled

What was not tested

  • Last FM scrobbling and other third parties
  • More exotic codecs
  • File transcoding
  • CD ripping

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

It's also worth noting that MusicBee has stopped support for Windows XP. As such, your wine prefix must be set to Windows 7.

It's quite dependant on some libraries, but it does work. The most important aspects, music playback and library management, work fine and the plethora of playback options all seem to work. For discussion and other tips, this long running forum thread proved to be very useful:

Things that were not tested

Hey, just to give some additional info. I'm still using the installation of MusicBee I set up here a few years ago:
I switched to the WINE 6 in the meantime and kept MusicBee up-to-date.

- Encoding music is working without issues (I mostly convert flac to mp3).
- Syncing to devices does not work (through MTP) - I played around this topic for several weeks and ended up syncing through Windows whenever I boot up the OS
-- however, you can sync to a folder ("virtual device") and rsync this directory to your phone

The most recent version 3.4.7805 is working for me. As mentioned, I set up the software a few years ago and just updated the program through the installer from the forum. :)

I ended up getting the most recent version working too -- apparently the issue was I didn't have the right version of .NET installed when I thought I definitely did...oops. I even somehow managed to get it working with *the wrong version of .NET* for a little while by manually extracting 3.4.7805 over my initial install, though now I actually have the correct version of .NET installed lol
Thank you for the comment!
