BridgeCentral

2.4.x has only minor improvements compared to the much larger ones in 2.3.x.  The by far most important one in 2.3.x was the introduction of the handicap system in July 2013 (player rating similar to golf or chess).  The software automatically exchanges handicap information with the central database of all DBf players.

Selected Test Results

What works

  • Installing via type "2." option (connection to club database on DBf server), including acceptance of the club specific "DBf kode" (security code to central db) on first connection, remembered afterwards.
  • Creating a new tournament
  • Uploading HTML with "Startdata" (list of players etc.)
  • Printing startdata as well as final result (to PDF via a Linux Cups-PDF printer queue)
  • Entering your own "skifteplan" (movement scheme)
  • Almost no font problems any more (texts look fine)

What does not

The button "Vis info om skifteplan" (show movement scheme info) doesn't show anything -- except that you can find the URL that it tried to launch in the wine log output (e.g. 'journalctl -b | grep err:winebrowser'; somewhat strange because the URL launches fine in firefox via `wine winebrowser http://bridge.dk/...pdf').

At the default resolution (96 dpi), when printing the result of a multi section tournament, the numbers in the tournament score column (total score) are slightly cut-off in the right hand side, but still readable.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Quite a lot not yet tested in exactly this new wine version.  E.g.:

  • Reading in a card distribution file (.bri).  That's expected to work out-of-the-box (it did in 1.8-rc3-48-gb0a17b, but test results for that version cannot be entered any more, if ever).
  • Reading in a BridgeMate result database (.bws) or generating an empty one for the emergency program ("Nødprogram").  I expect that installing mdac28 and jet40 via winetricks is still needed to make it work (like before).
  • Exporting and printing movement schemes ("skifteplaner"; also worked in previous wine except for general export delay bug not thought to be related to wine).

Additional Comments

Bug 26226 still applies: you have to either "winetricks msxml3" before installing, or, as I always do, build Wine from source with my patch from the bug report applied. Thus the above test results are not from a pure wine 1.9.16 but from wine-1.9.16-161-gd6d0d96 (latest git as of Aug 13 2016) + my patch (cleaned up version from Dec 2015) = wine-1.9.16-162-g98358b6. Note that BridgeCentral is a 32 bit app. Only tested in a pure 32 bit wine build + prefix, even though the host OS is 64 bit Linux.
