Enderal is a total conversion for TES V: Skyrim: a game modification that is set in its own world with its own landscape, lore and story. It offers an immersive open world, all for the player to explore, overhauled skill systems and gameplay mechanics and a dark, psychological storyline with believable characters.

Enderal is free and can be played by anyone owning a legal copy of TES V: Skyrim. (No DLCs are necessary.) It is developed non-commercially by SureAI, the team behind the renowned Oblivion mod "Nehrim: At Fate´s Edge" (and various other projects).

What works

Basically everything (~20 hours in game and no issue thus far) if running fullscreen. Great performances with CSMT.

What does not

Running windowed (including running the fake "fullscreen" mode of SKSE's OneTweak module; had to be disabled): the game window only displays what looks like random video memory. Running fullscreen works great though.

There are a few skyrim crashes sometimes, once every few hours. This is likely related to SKSE/the mod and Skyrim in general, not wine, as such crashes appear to occur on Windows systems as well.

Additional Comments

To make sure the Enderal Launcher works, you'll need to winetricks dotnet45. If you had any prior version of dotnet in your wineprefix or if you interrupted the dotnet45 install, the winetricks install will fail; in that case, either use a new clean wineprefix or manually download the dotnet 4.5 installer and run it yourself. Since version 1.0.3, the Enderal Launcher will not run if the name of the directory skyrim is installed in is not "Skyrim" (will complain about not finding TESV.exe); this is a launcher bug (currently being fixed) and can be "fixed" by renaming the directory, launching the launcher for updates and config, and renaming the directory again to its previous name before playing (running skse_loader.exe directly). It was also necessary to override d3dx9_42 to native for the game to work properly (large amount of missing textures without it); this is also necessary in the base Skyrim game with HD textures. It may also be required to disable OneTweak's fake "fullscreen" mode in the Enderal Launcher config; and in general, running the game in windowed mode did not work for me due to graphical corruption. The game needed to be fullscreen, and without OneTweak, for it to work. Finally, the performances with base wine are OK but not excellent; using wine-staging and enabling CSMT makes the performances great (with no detected issue thus far).

HowTo / Notes

Getting ENB Working

This method is experimental presently(see associated bugs), so try at your own behest.

  1. Install enb same way as in windows to game directory
  2. Open `winecfg` and under libraries add "d3d9" and set it to "Native then builtin".
  3. To set basic enb environment, run `winetricks --showbroken d3dcompiler_43`
  4. Additional dll requirements change depending on the preset used, `winetricks d3dx9_43 d3dx9_36` should work fine for most presets.
  5. Experiment with more dlls to get your preset working but avoid installing directx9, d3dx9_42 and d3d9 as they would do more harm then good.
Skyrim + ENB: Common Workarounds

Game getting stuck at load screen (Vivid Weathers ENB)

  • This is caused by enbeffect.fx and enbeffect.fx.ini files, I replaced these with the one from Tetrachromatic ENB Ghost Preset to make it work.

Game getting stuck after/during load screen, ingame music keeps running(Multiple ENB Presets)

  • Set `FixParallaxTerrain=false` in enblocal.ini

There is a black overlay over characters and objects(Tetrachromatic ENB Ghost Preset)

  • This is a issue in subsurface scattering, set`EnableSubSurfaceScattering=false` in enbseries.ini to solve this.
  • Surprisingly, enabling ambient occlusion also corrects this, only set `EnableAmbientOcclusion=true` in enbseries.ini to have both ambient occlusion ans subsurface scattering working without issues.

Everything is black with only hud visible

  • Set `FixTintGamma=false` in enblocal.ini
