What works

I have played quite a few hours of Final Fantasy X HD with just a few issues. For example, sometimes textures do not load and appear black. Interestingly, this seems to also happen on windows as found on the steam forums[1]. Occasionally, the screen stays completely black on screen transitions. The worst thing I had to do was restarting and loading the last save. As the game autosaves on almost any screen transition, there is usually not much progress to be lost.

What does not

The Final Fantasy X/X-2-Launcher does crash when "Settings" is clicked. Starting the games, however, does work. After you exit the game (no matter if you executed the launcher or the FFX.exe directly), a defunct process of the launcher remains and has to be killed manually.

The system menu and the save game menu display bug #45028.

While the performance is usually fine, there are areas where the game stutters a lot. Also activating shadows seems to impact the performance highly negatively.

Workarounds

I used 2xMSAA to avoid #45029 and deactivated shadows to improve performance. To work around #45028, I used a combination of scrolling down, which makes the options partly readable, and directly modifying the GameSetting.ini.

What was not tested

Completion of Final Fantasy X HD and almost anything from the other games included.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

The game was tested over multiple days at the beginning of March. In the meantime, I have experimented with DXVK in hope of getting a better performance throughout. Unfortunately, using DXVK crashes the game because there does not seem to be enough virtual address space available[1]. You can work around that with modifying the binary to add the Large Address Aware flag but this leads to at least one issue, where the camera locks and a fight does not continue (during the fighting tutorial, when you are supposed to let Yuna do her first summon). I have not done extensive testing with wined3d after the 15th of March.
