What works

  • Installing. Everything smooth here, a couple of "fixme" messages on console, but everything worked fine.
  • Playback. I was compiling code/running image processing rutines at the same time. Not a single skip (anymore, this used to be a big issue with older versions of wine/foobar). Tested only with MP3/MPC/FLAC/OGG/M4A. The sound seems "noisy" compared to Windows or playback with Aqualung/Amarok (Probably a misconfiguration on my side, though).
  • Opening files inside RAR (It should work with Zip/Gzip too, I don't see a reason why it would fail). Given, of course, that you installed the feature. This is standard plugin foo_unpack.
  • Adding folders to the Media Library
  • Adding folders to a playlist.
  • Most plugins I tried:
    • whats_new - works very good (The "type" and "change" columns are overlapped but can be separated)
    • foo_albumlist - works good.
    • foo_playcount - works good.
    • foo_dbsearch - works ok, track focus on playlist doesn't seem to work. (Builtin media library search works good too).
    • foo_input_mkx, input_alac, input_shorten, input_monkey - show under whats_new, components and filetypes. So I guess they work good, didn't actually test them.
    • foo_verifier - works ok
  • Using quick setup to set themes.
  • All the visualisations, but they are less fluid than when running under Windows.
  • Layout editing mode (but it hanged the app once here...).
  • The Volume Bar! (This didn't work last time I tried foobar under wine)
So it works excelent for normal use: music playback!

What does not

  • Importing themes (loaded the theme I use under windows... it shows completely screwed up... but read below).
  • Moving bars (volume, position, buttons...) around.
  • Status bar doesn't self-refresh.
  • Equalizer doesn't show up properly (It's huge! 61100x436 pixels). This is likely the reason why my theme didn't load up properly as I have the equalizer bundled into the main window. Didn't test any other DSP other than this.

Workarounds

What was not tested

  • Bunchload of plugins (see: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components_0.9 for an almost-comprensive list of plugins).
  • Audio CD playback
  • Didn't test any UI other than the default one.
  • Notting related to altering files (Tagging, Move/Copy/Delete files, Replaygain, ...)

Additional Comments

Works excellent for normal use. But if you're using foobar2k you probably want to tweak it to the limit, so I cannot give it a gold rating... yet.

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

The beta version of foobar2000 uses Directsound by default, which can cause some problems when playing music. In order to get the program to play music properly, you must set the Hardware Acceleration to emulate Directsound. Go to a terimal and type in "winecfg". A window will open with options for you to modify. Click on the Audio tab, and then look for "Hardware Acceleration". It is currently on "Full". Click on it, and you will have a list of options. Click on "Emulation", and then click on "Apply". foobar2000 should now be able to play music. Note that this will make foobar2000 version 0.8.3 give out an error when you try to play an audio file. Just change it back to "Full" in winecfg when you're done using foobar2000 version 0.9 beta.

[HOWTO]solve audio choppy problem in Ubuntu 8.10

following this link:http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=964580

Launch winecfg with below command.

padsp winecfg

In audio tab, only select oss driver.

Using below command to launch foobar2000, or just prefix the launch command in the shortcut with padsp

padsp wine foobar2000.exe

P.S. This workaround may crash pulseaudio.

WARNING
If you have a LARGE music library foobar2000 may hang while attempting to load it, which may freeze your computer for a short while. During this time, do NOT interrupt the process.
