Math Workshop

Choose from 7 areas in a math fun house. In the bowling area, a gorilla bowls a strike every time you correctly complete a round of eight problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, equivalency, or estimation.  Other areas touch on fractions (with chainsaws & glue), jigsaw puzzles, and simple logic games.

What works

Installation works and audio configuation.

Must place empty "shell.dll" file in path for program to start.

What does not

Error "This program requires an SVGA card set to 256 colors and a minimum resolution of 640 x 480" occurs when start program.

Don't know how to force Wine to operate with & report 8 bit colour. Gnu Display manager and/or X-windows login crash when I try to set X11 to 8 bpp on my new computer.

The Wine config file "user.reg" also seems to lose changes after starting Wine.

Workarounds

What was not tested

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO
  1. Create an empty "shell.dll" file and place it in "~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/".
This prevents the "Create a Cannot load library: 'SHELL.DLL'" error.

  2. Install TiMidity on your computer, if you don't already have it.  This is required for all Midi audio playback.  It should just work after installation on new distros.  If not then see See frankscorner.org/index.php?p=mid for manually running it.
  3. Install Xephyr on your computer, if you don't already have it.  This is to get an 8 bit / 256 color display required by the application.
  4. Run "install.exe" off the CD
    1. Press continue to install
    2. Press continue to pick the default installation directory (C:/WKSHPMPC)
    3. Files will install & the installer will say you need to use the MIDI Setup program to configure audio. Press OK to exit the installer.
  5. Run the MIDI Setup program (BROEMIDI.exe) from the C:/WKSHPMPC directory
    • cd ~/.wine/drive_c/WKSHPMPC
    • wine BROEMIDI.exe
    1. Select "Timidity port 0" under "selected MIDI driver"
    2. Pick either "Song 1" or "Song 2" and hit "Play" to determine which audio is preferred.  Click OK after determining & selecting a preference.
  6. Create a Xephyr window with 8 bit color depth
    • Xephyr :1 -ac -screen 800x600x8 &
  7. In another terminal go to the program's directory and start the app using Wine and Xephyr
    • DISPLAY=:1 wine MATH.EXE

The main screen should come up, but is currently rendering incorrectly and giving a DIB error
