What works

Installation as such works out of the box.

Once all the prerequisites are also installed (see below, What does not work section), most of the things work.

  1. The following was tested—and works—after loading a .mobi book:
    1. buttons to choose device to emulate (all the devices—three Fires: HD, HDX, HDX 8.9", Voyage and DX)
    2. all of the buttons: home, prev/next section, prev/next page, font size, rotate screen: portrait/landscape, all three display settings: black on white, sepia, white on black (night mode), show book cover, table of contents (clickable, although the cursor does not change shape and you do not know the links are clickable unless you try—then it indeed is clickable and it works), "NCX View", "Scale Up" and "Scale Down".
    3. converting to AZK produces an .azk file (in the same directory where the mobi file is)
  2. Opening an epub book works (it happens in steps: first the Previewer launches Kindlegen.exe—which is part of the Previewer installation—to convert, it politely tells you where the new mobi file is and what its name is, then in the second step the new mobi file is loaded). I have no idea how forgiving (or unforgiving) the Kindlegen is about the epub correctness: the epub I loaded had passed the epubcheck successfully.

What does not

Installing in a brand new and empty wineprefix finishes with launching the application, which then hangs. Workaround: install fonts [1] (I am not sure whether this actually helped or not), wine-mono-4.6.4 [2] (also not sure if this step was necessary), Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) [3] and jre-8u40-windows [4] (installation complains about unsuccessful install, but works nevertheless; newer versions fail to install [5])..

Resizing the app window using window manager leaves the app hanging (BUT window resizing works from within the application: buttons "Scale Up" and "Scale Down"; the window manager in question is xfce and has not been observed to misbehave).

Choosing a typeface when emulating Fire devices: only Georgia appears in the fall-down menu and Georgia is used to render the body text (not publisher default).

During this testing the app froze twice for no apparent reason.
