HowTo / Notes

How to install evernote in wine

To make Evernote work properly, you must use wine in 32-bit mode and install ie8 with winetricks.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Install winetricks with your package manager if it's not already installed.
  2. Run the following commands in a terminal:
    1. export WINEPREFIX="wineprefix_path"
    2. export WINEARCH=win32
    3. winetricks -q ie8
    4. wine "evernote_installer_path"
  3. Follow the installer's instructions
The evernote executable is now located at "wineprefix_path/drive_c/Program Files/Evernote/Evernote/Evernote.exe"
How to install evernote in q4wine

Here is how to make Evernote work with q4wine, a gui for wine.

Preparation steps:

  1. Make sure you have winetricks and q4wine installed (look for them in your package manager).
  2. Make sure that your terminal is properly configured in q4wine:
    1. Opens the options menu: File > Options
    2. Select "General" and opens the "Utils" tab
    3. Enter the path of your terminal, for instance "/usr/bin/gnome-terminal" if you use gnome.
    4. Enter "-e" as an argument (without the quotes, as always), so that q4wine can execute command just after opening a terminal.
  3. Download evernote for windows, from the evernote website.

Installation steps:

  1. In q4wine, create a new prefix with architecture "win32"
  2. Right click on the prefix > console > open console in prefix directory
  3. In the terminal window, type "winetricks -q ie8" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Wait for the ie8 installation to finish.
  4. In the prefix, run the Evernote installer.

Information for creating a launch icon:

The program's path is Program Files/Evernote/Evernote/Evernote.exe

Evernote and PlayOnLinux

Installing Internet Explorer 8 with PlayOnLinux doesn't make Evernote work: the note edition panel remains blank.

You really need to use winetricks to install ie8. Follow the instructions of the how-to for wine.
