What works

Installing game using downloadable installer stub from the SWTOR website

Logging in with mobile security key

Installing the last few months' worth of patches

Running around Tatooine killing random mobs

Having and finishing a conversation with an NPC

What does not

I initially did winetricks winhttp corefonts d3dx9 vcrun2008, but performance was very choppy, so I deleted that wine prefix and started again with a fresh one, and the second time I just did winetricks vcrun2008, and everything actually worked bettervcrun2008 is also needed on Windows so I thought it was a good idea to install it; it may or may not be necessary anymore

Workarounds

I used a 64-bit wine prefix and I did not use swtor_fix.exe - everything still worked fine

Windows version was set to Windows 7

I set the patching mode to SSN and disabled bitraider in launcher.settings but I also do this on my Windows machine because bitraider is really terrible in general

I used a virtual desktop equal to my ancient laptop's native resolution (1366x768) and I ran the game on "Low" graphics settings in "Fullscreen (Windowed)" mode
Launcher will not start if I set "Terminal=true" in the .desktop file but that ultimately was not a problem

What was not tested

Downloading the entire game - After running the installer, which created shortcuts in my applications menu, I copied the entire game folder into the install directory, selecting "merge" for all subfolders and "overwrite" for all files

Running around the fleet, which is always much more crowded than Tatooine

Chatting with other players

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

My specs:

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5165

Intel Core i5-480M

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB

8GB RAM

2TB Seagate Firecude Hybrid Hard Drive

On low settings, I get about 25 fps in the world killing mobs and about 40 fps in conversations with NPCs; fps is fairly steady so it's playable, albeit not very pretty.  People with very powerful machines will most likely get a flawless experience
