WordPerfect Office

Office Productivity Suite featuring WordPerfect 10, Quattro Pro 10, Presentations 10 and (some editions) Paradox 10.

The four main applications have their own AppDB entries. This entry covers suite installation and, eventually, the suite utilities. The rating given here is for the suite installer and is independent of the ratings given to the four main applications.

What works

All normal word processing functions work.  I'm still testing as of 21 Aug. 2010 and will report more about this later.

If you have access to the OEM Office 2002 CD, you'll get WordPerfect 10.  For those who, like me, insist on using WordPerfect 8 until they die, WordPerfect 10 is almost as good, and much better than the later versions.

What does not

"Enhanced filename" option (just use Preferences to disable).

Install has a problem but there is an easy fix (see further comments below).

Must invoke the program twice to make it run -- first time only runs splash screen; second time gets the program running, but with a vertically minimized window.  The window behavior is easily fixed by configuring with KWin.  There's probably also a fix for the "run twice" procedure, but I haven't dug into it yet.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Haven't yet tested printing or some of the more obscure and seldom-used functions, but will do so and update this report at some point soon (I hope).

Additional Comments

Installer (setup32.exe) runs, then sees itself as "another Corel program" and demands that the "other" program be shut down before install can continue. Whether you check Yes or No at that point, installation stops. WORKAROUND: (a) Copy the entire CD to a folder on hard drive. (b) Edit setup32.exe to remove internal references to its own name. I'm referring here to the fields which will show up in a tab in Windows if you show the Properties of the file. I'm not sure which of those references is triggering the problem -- I just changed all of them, and while I was at it, all references to Corel. There are many free file editors out there to change these fields. I used Colin Wilson's XN Resource Editor 3.0.0.1 (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm). (c)Change the filename of setup32.exe to something else, while you're at it. It doesn't matter what else you call it. (d) Configure Wine as Win98 so that it won't demand administrator rights. Then use Wine to run the renamed file (on your hard drive). Installation will proceed normally. If you love WordPerfect, this is an easy way to have it running on a Linux system. It takes a lot longer to describe the procedure than to actually do the procedure.
