What works

Almost everything works out of box.

  • Launcher
  • Gameplay
  • Audio
  • DLCs
  • GECK
  • NVSE
  • NVGE (See Workarounds and Extra Comments)
  • ENB (See Workarounds and Extra Comments)
  • Reshade (See Workarounds and Extra Comments)
  • Heavy Modding (See Extra Comments)

What does not

  • Reshade/NVGE fail to correctly apply some depth based effects (Workaround available)
  • ENB/Reshade shaders don't compile natively (Workaround available)
  • d3dx complains about D3DXLoadSurfaceFromMemory Unhandled filter 0x3 continuously (Workaround available)
  • NVGE binkw32.dll causes crash on game load.

Workarounds

For ENB/Reshade

  • winetricks d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_38 d3dx9_43 d3dcompiler_43
  • Run with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n,b"

This also solves issue with wine continuously complaining about D3DXLoadSurfaceFromMemory Unhandled filter.

For Performance

  • winetricks galliumnine
  • Run with WINEESYNC=1 (Staging Required)

NOTE: Some ENB presets cause AMDGPU graphics drivers crash when used with galliumnine, which shouldn't happen as a userlevel process should never be able to crash kernel. To avoid this set AoType to 0 in enbseries.ini.

Sometimes Reshade or NVGE will fail to detect Depth Buffer or will detect a wrong size depth buffer thus failing to apply effects like AO properly. If the AO is being applied above objects or being not applied at all this is the reason.

If Reshade is not detecting Depth Buffer toggling some checkboxes in DX9 tab or reversing the depth buffer in DisplayDepth shader could help.

If Reshade/NVGE are detecting wrong size depth buffer that can be corrected by setting iShadowMapResolution to a value below vertical resolution.

NOTE: binkw32.dll provided with NVGE outright crashes the game, I was able to use all NVGE effects without it though.

What was not tested

Nothing

Additional Comments

Game runs great out of box and with a little tweaking becomes ready for modding in no time. Gallium Nine improves FPS considerably and is essential if thinking of heavy modding. I am right now running game uGridsToLoad=9, 200+ active mods and about 140 esp long load order without issues.

NOTE: 140 esp limit in load order is limit imposed by game exe and even windows version is affected by it.

I primarily used Mod Organizer Legacy for modding and FOMM for installing some rare old mods. MO2 with uvfs patch does work but it was failing to load a few things ingame, prime example being road textures from NMC texture pack.

Regarding ENB, NVGE should be first preference of anybody as performance costs are much much less when compared to ENB, As for ENB. I would suggest turning off most of the ENB optimizations in enblocal.ini as wine already does an amazing job in managing memory.

Also, on older versions of wine some ENB effects sometimes don't get rendered natively, this can be corrected by installing gallium nine too.

NOTE: Wine-4.21 right now suffers from bug 48185 causing Fallout to not detect ram properly and crashing with "Not enough memory to run application" so I would suggest using a wine version before that.
