What works

Most software functionality works, including:

  • Recording and editing digital audio and virtual instrument clips
  • MIDI in/out
  • Loop library/loop import
  • VST instruments and effects*
  • Piano roll, step & notation editors
  • Low latency audio using WaveRT or WineASIO (recommended)
  • File open/save and audio file export
  • Integrated Melodyne 4 (Pro Studio, only works with Mixcraft 8 build 402 or later)

It is recommended to install the 32-bit version of Mixcraft, as the 64-bit version's performance suffers under Wine.

*VST compatibility varies between plugins. Some VSTs will work better than others, and some might not work at all. Please refer to Acoustica's Wine compatibility document for more information.

What does not

Features that do not work correctly include:

  • Video editing (Mixcraft crashes when trying to create a video track or loading a project with video)
  • A few of the bundled VST plugins do not display correctly. Please refer to Acoustica's Wine compatibility document for more information.
  • When a VST instrument is unloaded (removed from track, changing presets, track removed, etc.), the next added VSTi will usually cause Mixcraft to freeze. There are a few VST instruments that seem to be unaffected by this, such as the bundled "Acoustica Instruments" and "Acoustica Expanded Instruments". See Wine bug #31212. More details are available in Acoustica's Wine compatibility document.
  • Drag & drop audio or MIDI files into Mixcraft does not work, and also affects some plugins such as the bundled Alpha and Omni samplers. Many third party plugins such as Plogue Sforzando work fine with drag & drop, though. See Wine bug #39372.
  • The Melodyne installer in Mixcraft Pro Studio 8 may crash if you are installing into a multi-arch Wine profile. To get around this, use Wine-Staging or install into a 32-bit only Wine profile. See Wine bug #36697.

Additional Comments

If you are able to work around the above mentioned bugs, Mixcraft runs quite well in Wine, especially when using the WineASIO driver with Jack. Under this configuration, the 32-bit version of Mixcraft comes very close (if not equal) to matching the performance attained under Windows.
