What works
Everything, with workaround and the aid of winetricks.
What does not
settings wont open. closing windows crashes the client.
Workarounds
I installed everything bellow from a %100 fresh wine-stable installation. I installed WINE and winetricks via terminal, and ran winetricks to apply the following settings BEFORE trying to install IMVU. I am not sure that ALL the tweaks I applied are exactly necessary, but, It did get the client to run properly, so, without further adue, I applied the following via winetricks:
Winetricks->Settings->check following:
ao=disabled
cfc=disable
csmt=off
ddr=opengl
forcemono
hidewineexports=enable
hosts
mwo=disable
orm=backbuffer
rtlm=auto
sandbox
sound=alsa
strictdrawordering=enabled
vd=off
winxp
Apply, and close.
I also installed vcrun6, directX redist, and a few other things via winetricks windows dll installer. (I can't recall them all, just remember IMVU relies mostly on html and python, and install all related files via winetricks windows dll installer.
What was not tested
Nothing.

Additional Comments
Settings opens, and render option can be set to opengl via advanced settings in the settings tab now. Windows and chatrooms can be freely closed now without crashing the client. everything runs very smoothly with opengl enabled. the settings tabs tab a minutte or two to open the first time. be patient.

If the fonts in game look distorted, make sure you install the "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" package, as this provides the windows fonts used by IMVU. You can install it easily on Debian/Ubuntu based distros by using the following command in the terminal ("Ctrl+Alt+T" is a keyboard shortcut to open it):
sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
You should be prompted to enter your password for sudo as usual.

The only bug I've encountered on the staging branch is rooms with special characters (? ? ? etc etc) sometimes glitch out in the top bar. If it happens: you're still in all the rooms and tabs you were in previously, you just can't see them. If you click on the IMVU logo you get back to the main view, and you're able to see all your tabs again (except the room that caused the glitched name). Even though you can't see the glitched room in your tab bar, you're still in it, and the only way to get back into it is to click "join" again which causes your tab bar to glitch out again.
