Workarounds
Installed the Shark007 Codec Pack, which needed to be installed as Windows7 or later. Windows Version was also set the same as codecs.
I don't know which specific codecs were needed (probably related to AVPro Video Unity asset). Without these codecs, the game froze after hitting the 'new game' button.
Allowing the window manager to control/decorate windows caused the game to minimize at the start of important cut scenes. Disallowing control seems to solve this.

A Linux version was promised in the original Kickstarter, and the devs have repeatedly tweeted that a native Linux version is a top priority.
