HowTo / Notes

HOWTO: Install for those with sound issues.

1. Install using this ( )
Please Note: You may install as root (it will give ALL users access to the same COD) or as user, giving it to only one user. Saves on multiple installs.
2. Chmod directory to 0777 (you need write permission for configs).
3. Run winecfg. Ensure "driver emulation" under sound is not checked. Runs on ALSA or OSS (depending on your setup, I prefer ALSA but has been reported to work on OSS).
4. It will run as "codmp" or "codsp."

Loki Installer's Binary Preferences

The Loki installer was designed to give WINE last preference.  If you wish to edit this, do the following:

Substitute paths and editor as required/desired.  The path used is Gentoo but I am told works on other distrobutions as well.
a) nano -w /usr/local/bin/codmp
Line 5 says "WINE_NAMES". The list will be checked sequentially. Remove WINE from the end, add it to the front. Alternatively, if you use CVSWINE, add cvswine to the beginning and remove cvswine from its position.
b) nano -w /usr/local/bin/codsp
Same as above

Keep in mind if you do not edit this file it will try Cedega, CVSCedega, Winex3 and CVSWinex and finally Winex before attempting to use WINE.

Since Winex3 and Winex are older software I strongly recommend moving WINE ahead of all of them, with the exception of Cedega if you are that way inclined.

Multiplayer Issue

While the issue actually has NOTHING to do with Call of Duty itself, it should be posted.

Some users will get a 507 "insufficient O/S priviliges" error in game. This is generated by "PunkBuster" the software that is aimed at stopping cheats.

For those wondering the same error occurs in Cedega 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 (as well as previous versions). This problem is not isolated to WINE, the same issue appears to occur on 64bit Installations of Windows XP and Mac OS X systems.

Please note: Users with this problem can still play on servers without PunkBuster enabled.  It is not an issue with Call of Duty.  All errors should be referred to the team.

Workaround for buffer overflow - NVIDIA graphics
by bittmann on Wednesday October 27th 2010, 13:12
Looks like the overflow may be caused by a (surmising) too-lengthy list of OpenGL extensions supported in the most recent NVIDIA drivers.

There is an environment variable that can be set to limit the list of extensions to those present in a given driver version.

Editing the application launch code to include this environment variable cures the buffer overflow on launch, here.

Workaround: In codsp and codmp, change the line

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 $WINE_EXEC $GAME_BINARY "$@" &&

to limit the extension list to those present in an older (177.00) version of the NVIDIA graphics driver.

Works for me.

Thank you for this workaround. Game runs just fine now.

Can you please explain me step by step how to do that ?
RE: Workaround for buffer overflow - NVIDIA graphics
by gersen on Friday January 13th 2012, 11:27
The simplest way is to go to your game folder (it should contain CoDSP.exe), open a terminal there and instead of starting the game with wine CoDSP.exe

start it with:

__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 wine CoDSP.exe

(That first character is a double underscore.)

Installing with 2 CDs
by Mike on Sunday December 20th 2009, 11:48
I had some problems installing the "Game of the Year Edition" from 2 CDs. I created a new wineprefix, ran /dvd/Setup.exe from my homedir, but I was unable to "wine eject" when it asked for CD2. Before exiting the installer, I created a "e:" symlink to my /dvd mountpoint in the dosdevices directory, which allowed me to eject the disc, put in CD2 and mount it, but the installer didn't see the second CD. Maybe it had something to do with the installer running from the z: letter that maps back to /, because once I reran the installer with the "e:" symlink to /dvd and the "e::" symlink to /dev/dvd, I was able to swap discs and the installer saw the contents had changed. The installer crashed with an I/O error when I was asked to reinsert CD1. I'm not sure what happens in that stage of the installation, but the game could be usable. I'm getting a buffer overrun error when starting CoDSP.exe, but it sounds like this may have something to do with NVIDIA's 190.42 drivers.

by Robert M. Muncrief on Friday November 20th 2009, 16:17
Call of Duty and United Offensive do not work with the latest Nvidia 190.42 drivers. They both complain of a "buffer overflow" error during startup and crash. They both work fine with the 185.18.36 drivers.

I have a GTX 275 video card, AMD Phenom 4 CPU, and 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
by Mike on Sunday December 20th 2009, 11:20
I have the same problem and I'm also using the 190.42 drivers with a GTX260. Do you know if 190.53 fixes this?
by Mike on Sunday December 20th 2009, 20:04
I can also confirm that going back to 185.18.36 allows the game to be played.
by Robert M. Muncrief on Sunday December 20th 2009, 22:18
Unfortunately the 190.53 drivers have the same problem.

Video card missing one or more features
by christooss on Friday October 17th 2008, 21:04
Your video card appears to be missing one or more features required to run Call of Duty.

You should install the latest drivers for your video card, being sure to uninstall the old drivers first. If you already have the latest drivers, you should completely uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them. This fixes most problems. If the game still doesn't work, it may be that your video card does not have the minimum features required. Please check the readme for more information, including a list of supported video cards.

I have Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 so I don't think this should be a problem

Any ideas?
RE: Video card missing one or more features
by Sören on Saturday December 26th 2009, 13:19
Afaik Quake III Engine uses S3TC, which is not delivered with MESA by default due to legal issues.
Have at look at:
...or just use "driconf" to make your system pretend S3TC ability.

I had the same problem using an ati graphics card with the free radeon driver.

The installation of libtxc-dxtn0 fixed it for me:

For Ubuntu:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn0
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
RE: Video card missing one or more features
by BitMaster on Sunday July 7th 2013, 17:04
You sir, are a hero! I had the same issue on ArchLinux with the Intel HD graphic drivers. Installing both libtxc_dxtn and lib32-libtxc_dxtn fixed it! If you could spare the time, please tell me how you found out!

As a note: I did patch the executable to get around the "buffer overflow" error. Use a hex editor to search for GL_EXTENSIONS (not WGL_EXTENSIONS!) and change %s into %p.
RE: Video card missing one or more features
by jost on Thursday July 18th 2013, 16:38
Glad to help you ..

S3 Texture Compression (S3TC / DXTC / DXTn) is needed by many games.

It seems to be protected by patent. So they dont include it to the free drivers.

Installing the package made many games work for me.

If you use proprietary drivers from nvidia or ati, you usually dont need to install it.

Install Problems
by Raul Sanchez on Tuesday May 20th 2008, 18:32
Ubuntu 8.04

I have CoD downloaded as 2 ISO images
How can I make install go on when it asks to change CD1 to CD2 if the ISOs are mounted in a "hard" folders (/media/iso & /media/iso2, for example)?

"umount" command is not valid. It says "Device Busy"

I suppose I could solve this problem easy burning that ISO images on CDs and using "wine eject" command, but I want to know if it's possible to solve this question doing the first way I said :)

Installing games with Wine

Hey All,
I found this a very useful howto when installing configuring games using Wine:
No 'sprint' in COD
by Erik on Friday March 28th 2008, 19:21
Hey All, I've been playing Call of Duty with wine and it runs fine except for two issues.
The first issue is that there doesn't seem to be a 'sprint' option in Call of Duty with wine. It just doesn't seem to be there. I don't if it's because it is normally bound to ' and doesn't seem to work in Call of Duty with Wine. Otherwise it runs fine. It is interesting since the sprint option is available in the United Offensive Expansion Pack with wine and if you bind it to another key, it works.
The Second issue is that every second time I start the game no keys work which means I can't move. The mouse works so I can look around, but I'm a sitting duck! The only way to get out of the game is to to log out and log in again, and then it works fine.

Mouse lags
by fernando_rg on Monday July 23rd 2007, 13:33
I'm having some troubles to make the mouse behave correctly on this game, frequently it lags badly in-game with no reason. Apparently there's nothing to do with fps, which is capped at 76 and rarely changes. It's an optical mx518. I'm trying to mess around with xorg.conf settings, changing mouse protocol to 'auto', 'imps/2', 'evdev', with no success. I think it's related with Wine itself.

Anyone can confirm this?
Loki Installer Gone
by Ben on Saturday July 7th 2007, 14:54
Loki has taken down all their wine installers in favor of supporting more native work.

Can someone help me get this installed? I blew away my system and I can't get past the CD change during installation. I don't know how to mount the second CD; it appears on my desktop as if it were mounted but it shows up empty. Once I close the installer, I can see all the files again.

RE: Loki Installer Gone

Sorry, it seems this site does not allow "tags":

wine eject drive_letter:
RE: Loki Installer Gone
by Ben on Sunday July 8th 2007, 13:16
That works. My problem is that the second CD will not mount properly afterward. I put it in but it appears to be an empty disk. If I mount it outside of the installation process it's ok and I can see everything... but during install it won't work.

Maybe I have to manually do some part of the mounting process. I have 2 CD drives in my computer; is it possible that I could tell it to check the second one somehow?
RE: Loki Installer Gone
by Antonio López on Sunday July 8th 2007, 18:32
Maybe you are trying to change cd while keeping some app (i.e. browser, shell) "occupying" the cd directory so the 1st cd cannot be properly unmounted. Try to start the installation process taking care of not doing that.

For example, if you are running wine from a shell and your 1st cd is mounted on /media/cdrom0, try doing "wine /media/cdrom0/Launch.exe" rather than doing "cd /media/cdrom0" first and running "wine Launch.exe" afterwards.
RE: Loki Installer Gone
by Matt Wrenn on Sunday July 15th 2007, 14:15
I got past the CD swap problem when installing the "Game of the Year" edition of CoD using "wine eject d:", but that introduced a new issue. After the install is complete with the second CD, it asks for the first CD again. I can swap the first CD back in without using the "wine eject d:" command, but the install routine produces this error:

"An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This
is normally caused by bad installation media or
a corrupt installation file
Abort Retry"

I have checked the CD visually and run the install in Windows to confirm that there is nothing wrong with my installation media. I have also re-run the install in Wine using the "wine eject d:" to swap back to the first CD and the same error occurs. Something about this error is preventing the complete installation of the game and it will not run, even after applying a cracked exe. Any suggestion on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated.
RE: Loki Installer Gone
by Antonio López on Wednesday July 18th 2007, 19:05
Hi Matt,

I get the same results as you, but have a look and check out the game is installed anyway. Multiplayer game runs OK, but not the single player game (probably that I/O error got something to do with it).

Maybe it's time to bring this game rating down to Bronze since the Loki installer is not available anymore (I tried to, but to no avail, I don't know why).
RE: Loki Installer Gone
by jeff on Tuesday August 21st 2007, 19:41
I installed the GotY edition too and got this same error. But using Wine 0.9.43 and the v1.4 no-cd fix the single player works fine (so far). I do find it a little ridiculous that even with this installation error non-cracked multiplayer works perfectly.

Sound Problems with newer Wine
by André Kvist Aronsen on Friday April 13th 2007, 5:05
I'm using Kubuntu Feisty 7.04, preinstalled with Wine 0.9.33, and Call of duty does not work correctly - the sound is delaying and is just completely noisy. I tried to install 0.9.34 with the same results. Wine 0.9.28 (with gold status) work perfectely though, so there seems to be a problem with the newer versions of Wine. What could this be?

Also CoD starts but after black screen (present about 1 second) I get "Fatal Error" message window saying "Could not load OpenGL. ...". When click on "OK" in that window "CoD Console" window appears also saying "Could not load OpenGL. ...".
I do have OpenGL drivers (Nvidia 5600 XT) because i use XGL.

How to fix this problem?

RE: Graphic driver problem
by Tim Felgentreff on Monday March 19th 2007, 18:13
I installed CoD via Loki-Installer, however, when I try to start it, a black screen comes up for a millisecond and then an error box saying, I need more recent drivers because my card doesn't support all the needed extensions. However, in Windows the game runs fine.
Is this a bug with wine, or the xorg-drivers? I have got an Intel 940GM with latest intel drivers installed. Tried the i810 as well, its no good, either.

err:module:import_dll Library ntoskrnl.exe (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS" failed, status c0000135
err:module:import_dll Library ntoskrnl.exe (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\windows\\system32\\drivers\\SECDRV.SYS" failed, status c0000135

I get the same thing with both the native installer and the loki installer. Any ideas of what I can do to fix this?

I get this same error on 0.9.22 ...
I also tried version 0.9.7 and I still get this error ??

You have to get a no-cd crack in order to play the single player mode. Secdrv.sys afaik belongs to the SecuROM copy protection that is not supported by WINE.
Multiplayer mode is not affected since it doesn't use any copy protection.

Yep, I figured that out just a short while ago..
Thanks! It's working now...!

Yeah I figured out shortly after word about the cd rom issue and got a hack for it. Although the game still refused to play. Anyway I got a new computer with a nvidia card, installed the glx driver, and the game now works. My other computer has an ATI card that I couldn't get the glx driver to work on. So be sure to install the propriety driver for your card if you're having problems.
Making the MP work 100%!
by Adrian B on Tuesday July 18th 2006, 15:03
Okay, i got the multiplayer WITH PUNKBUSTER to work by installing from, selecting the path to CoD and making it update.
THEN: issue winecfg in a cli and add the path to CoD in the applications tab and select it as Win98.
Punkbuster working!
by czolgu on Thursday June 8th 2006, 11:37
It's finally working now. After last punbuster update i can play on all pb servers now.
RE: Punkbuster working!
by Alexander Stanley on Thursday June 8th 2006, 16:43
Confirmed. Working on 2 servers under Gentoo 9.14... I'll test more after this (long) weekend. I obviously missed the Pb update before :)
RE: Punkbuster working!
by daiashi on Monday June 12th 2006, 20:49
Hey czolgu. How did you update pb to get it to work.
RE: Punkbuster working!
by czolgu on Monday June 12th 2006, 23:51
Using both pbsetups - windows and linux versions, but i think that only windows version shoul be necessary...
RE: Punkbuster working!
by Wiebe Cazemier on Saturday December 30th 2006, 17:02
You also don't get the error "unkown windows API function" and get kicked? I get it, sometimes immediately, sometimes after a few minutes. Judging by the files in cod-dir/pb (file modification time, existence of pbclold.dll), it updates itself perfectly using punkbusters auto update, so I have the newest version.
RE: Punkbuster working!
by czolgu on Saturday December 30th 2006, 17:51
Unfortunatelly, after few months they made a PB update and right now i can't get it work. It worked for 3-4 months. Now i get these "unkown windows API function".

The problem is with WINE as well as the architecture.

Simply put: WINE is a Windows application layer. Therefore it is not the same as Windows 2000 or XP, even though it tries to be. It's like WINE is a green apple, Windows XP is red... Very similar, do the same fuction, but in some ways different. Most programs don't notice this, but Punkbuster does on Call of Duty.
by Kavon on Wednesday June 7th 2006, 10:40
from what i read up top it says punkbuster doesn't work which is a bummer. but i found a link where u can get punkbuster for linux/windows/mac. i reccomend trying windows or linux and see what happens. once i find that darn cod disk 2 i'll try it myself if punkbuster dosen't work.
RE: PunkBuster
by Alexander Stanley on Wednesday June 7th 2006, 17:04
The Punkbuster linked on the site is the same as the previous ones. I've tested Windows and Linux, but it isn't an issue of "incompatibility" in a real sense. Punkbuster appears to be hardcoded to 32bit Windows, which WINE and Windows XP 64bit are not. Therefore, both WINE and Windows XP 64bit submit errors to the Evenbalance server.

Sorry to disappoint.

no problem for me, i run 32-bit suse as primary, meanin punkbuster willl work on my pc? (i hope so cuz i can borrow my friends cod 2 cd)

coduo shuters or skips while playing
by daiashi on Friday May 19th 2006, 19:16
coduo seems to skip while playing even if I create a game.
Updated nvidia drivers.Thius doesnot occur in cedega.
Running wine 0.9.1.Any ideas?
RE: coduo shuters or skips while playing
by Alexander Stanley on Friday May 19th 2006, 20:20
I'd suggest updating WINE... I'm using 9 versions ahead of you and not seeing any problems at present.
RE: coduo shuters or skips while playing
by Cookie on Friday May 26th 2006, 15:25
Isnt there a newer version of wine? If so you should upgrade that would work, and make sure your setting are set to what cod requires
Sound issues.
by daiashi on Friday May 12th 2006, 20:22
I installed with loki installer, everything went fine.
When I run the game I get 166 sound files missing.
This shows up under windows when there is no drivers installed.
Any ideas?Thanks.
RE: Sound issues.
by daiashi on Friday May 12th 2006, 20:43
OK I got it to work but the sound lags slightly behind
action.A little anoying but just wanted to know if there was a fix?
RE: Sound issues.
by Alexander Stanley on Friday May 12th 2006, 22:32
I had a sound-lag issue before but it went away after a reboot and updating to 1.5.

Give the update a shot. Other than that it might be an internal WINE issue...

What sound card, Sound settings etc are you using?
RE: Sound issues.
by Florian on Thursday December 28th 2006, 15:14
i have got the same problem as him.... my cod is in version 1.5 and another update is useless :(

i use the onboard sound "ac97" (or something like this) of my mainboard "asrock 939 s 56-m"
sound settings in winecfg are:

"abtastrate" (dont know it in german sry):8000 (doesnt matter what i take here, always the same effect)
"nits pro abtastung": 8 (changes dont change anything)
Treiberemulation is checked....

the sound lags ~ 1 second behind the game.... if i choose oss i got the 166 sound files missing error :(
RE: Sound issues.
by Karel on Monday January 8th 2007, 6:49
i have exactly the same problem. sound lags 1 second behind game

wine-0.9.28, alsa, soundcard: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW

any idea to solve it?
RE: Sound issues.
by Ben on Thursday January 25th 2007, 21:18
I have this problem too. My terminal shows this error repeatedly while running the game:

err:dsound:DSOUND_MixOne underrun on sound buffer 0x17bdc0

I'm using the ALSA driver (the others give me the 166 sound files missing error). I've tried it with & without emulation, set the app to run in Win2k, Win98, and WinXP, and it's always the same thing.

My hardware is an onboard audio set: Analog Devices AD1885 according to the research I've done. I tried installing almost every package in the repos that has something to do with ALSA but got nowhere.

I know in cedega there was an unmount button.
How do I do this in wine? The reason being upon
changing to disk 2 it aborts the install.
RE: Installing
by Alexander Stanley on Saturday April 22nd 2006, 23:39
unmount using root...

umount /dev/cdrom
eject /dev/cdrom

Change disks

mount /dev/cdrom

Then go back to the start to eject and load disk1 again :)
RE: Installing
by daiashi on Monday April 24th 2006, 16:04
When I try to umount /dev/cdrom I get a cannot mount
device in use.Any ideas.Thanks.
RE: Installing
by Alexander Nicolaysen Sørnes on Monday April 24th 2006, 16:39
Be sure not to run the installer from the CD mountpoint, e.g. if you have the CD mounted at /mnt/cdrom, do 'cd /mnt; wine cdrom/FILE' instead of 'cd /mnt/cdrom; wine FILE'.
If you still get the problem, you can use the command 'wine eject'.
RE: Installing
by Alexander Stanley on Monday April 24th 2006, 18:33
(As Root)
mkdir /mnt/cdrom
chmod -R 0777 /mnt/cdrom

Put he CDROM in the drive.

(As User)
Run "winecfg". Add a new Driver letter (D: or E:) set to "/mnt/cdrom". Make sure it is setup to be a cdrom drive. Save and exit.

(As Root)
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom (Substitute /dev/cdrom for your CDROM Device Name)

umount /mnt/cdrom
eject /mnt/cdrom

You CAN use umount -l /mnt/cdrom if it fails to unmount (CDROMs are read-only) but I wouldn't unless you have to.

For the actual install, see my Loki Installer HOWTO at the top.
RE: Installing
by Lee Chapman on Wednesday August 9th 2006, 21:56
Well, I actually thought this one was gonna work. It gives the same device in use response. The second umount didn't give any error message, but the drive just sits threre, the door wont open and the eject command responds with:
eject: tried to use `/mnt/cdrom' as device name but it is no block device
eject: unable to find or open device for: `/mnt/cdrom'

Why is there no way to use the second CD (DVD) drive for disk 2? I can't believe it doesn't just look for it there if it sees more than one CD/DVD drive...
RE: Installing
by Andy on Friday May 5th 2006, 23:59
Install using loki installer.
RE: Installing... another option for the problem of second cd
by allen finch on Saturday September 1st 2007, 9:30
For the GOTY edition I was able to simply abort the install when it asked for the second disk. I was then asked by the installer if I wanted to roll back the installation. I replied No so what was installed up to that point was left behind. Then I simply copied the pak files from the second cd to the proper directory into which the pak files from the first cd were installed(don't remember the directory name at moment).
No singleplayer.
by Alex Elliott on Thursday April 6th 2006, 15:21
I've installed and patched my Call of Duty up to 1.5, but all I can access is CoDMP.exe, if I attempt to use CoDSP.exe it appears and then dissapears with no loading imbetween. Not sure what the fault is beyond that it is a "page fault on read access" problem.
