What works

ChemDraw works smoothly in general. The following functions have been tested with success:

  • Drawing and manipulating chemical structures with simple and complex stereochemistry
  • Predicting NMR spectra
  • Converting structures to names and vice versa
  • Saving and opening .cdx files
  • Saving as other graphic formats (.png, .eps, etc.)

Chem3D also works (though less smoothly). The following functions have been tested with success:

  • Drawing molecules in 2D, viewing and manipulating generated 3D structures (scaling, rotating, translating, reflecting)
  • Detecting stereochemistry
  • Minimising energy with MM2
  • Setting up, running, and viewing MM2 dynamics and adjusting temperatures and heating rates, etc.
  • Calculating and viewing Extended Huckel charges and surfaces

What does not

  • Searching on SciFinder fails with error -2147467259 and may cause ChemDraw to hang
  • Installing GAMESS on Chem3D (so can't use any GAMESS ab initio features)
  • 3D structures disappear when Chem3D workspace is out of focus, and only reappear when the workspace is back in focus

Workarounds

(Courtesy of rc454 on the test for a previous version: https://appdb.winehq.org/objec...)

Extra libraries are required to be installed via winetricks in order to get ChemDraw and Chem3D to run:

  • winetricks vb6run gdiplus vcrun2010 dotnet40

The .exe installer will not work as is. Therefore, to install ChemOffice, one first needs to decompress it using, say, 7z:

  • 7z x cop16.0.1.exe

then run the installation from the msi package located in Windows/PerkinElmer/ChemOffice:

  • wine msiexec.exe /i PerkinElmer_ChemOffice_Professional_2016.msi
