To get multiplayer working, use winetricks:
$ winetricks directplay

NOTE: The host should leave the game last, otherwise it will hang for the other players when they try to leave.

Middle click emulation misclicks

The option of emulating middle click by clicking both mouse buttons might cause misclicks ingame. This happened to me on Mint 19.2 Cinnamon.
