What works
The game can be played, but only in window mode.
What does not
Full screen modes appear not working, the game fails to start if the window is as wide as the desktop (giving OpenGL errors), and hanging with a hourglass cursor on black screen.
Large resolutions fails to start as well, largest I managed to get running is about 1600x900, while 1920x1080 works in Windows (maybe related to only 2GB GPU memory?). If a too large resolution is used, the game hangs hard when starting a new game (with the Loading status bar some 20% in).
As a consequence of running the game in a Wine window, map scrolling using the mouse is not working. In most RTS games you can move the view by pushing the mouse against the edge of the view, but here the mouse will just go over to the linux desktop. The imperfect workaround is to scroll with the keys.
Workarounds
Had to enable a virtual desktop in winecfg, and set the window size to less than the screen resolution (lowering the resolution was not enough).
Many of the workarounds depend on using winetricks - used the June 2019 version (the one that comes with Ubuntu 16.04 does not work).
Sound sometimes stop working in Ubuntu after exiting the game. The cure is to restart pulseaudio:
% pulseaudio -k
% pulseaudio -D
What was not tested
Only playing survival mode games were tested (in offline mode) - not the campaign.

Additional Comments
Roughly followed the installation steps at https://forum.winehq.org/viewt...
For installation it is important to use the NetFx471 version (the 471 preview worked). Versions 4.8 or 4.6x did NOT work to install.
For playing, the open Nouveau drivers give an awful framerate, used NVidia proprietary drivers (version 430).

Many test results say "See above where to find this", referencing dotNetFx471_Full_x86_x64_Slim.exe. This file can be found here, inside the old directory.
