steam install went fine, installed game from steam menu<--is there any other way?
Maybe the Compiz Fusion that is installed has caused the error?

as soon as I initialize the game it goes full screen then minimizes and I can't find it, and my default resolution is that of the game.

I rated Garbage, but want to rate platinum, if only I could get the game to work!! yeah it runs, but I can't play it, because it minimizes and then I can't get it to go back to full screen. The same thing happened when I installed on Debian Etch
