What works

Gameplay, graphics, and multimedia all seem to work as they should.

What does not

The launcher generated by the game's installer launches the 32-bit version by default, which may not support the multisampled graphics that are necessary for the game. 

With multisampling turned off, the graphics quality is low, and one or more puzzles become nearly unsolvable.

In-game graphics show only garbage when using Wine version 3.4 or newer with Mesa version 18.0.1 or older and multisampling enabled.

Using the Dynamic screen resolution slows down the game.

Workarounds

To run the 64-bit version of the game, edit the launcher that starts the game, so that it starts "/usr/bin/wine64-development C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix [Your home directory here]/.wine/dosdevices/c\:/Program\ Files/The\ Witness/witness64_d3d11.exe" with the working directory "[Your home directory here]/.wine/dosdevices/c\:/Program\ Files/The\ Witness/" .

Multisampling should be turned on so that textures are rendered correctly.

For usable multisampled graphics, either use Wine 3.4 or newer with Mesa version 18.0.1 or newer, or use Wine 3.3 or older with older Mesa versions.

The screen resolution should be locked to a fixed resolution, for instance Display Size, 1080p or 720p, for increased performance.
