What works

Installs.  Opening Movie.  Opening Menu and game preferences.  I played a game for a few turns before it crashed.  Also saving a game works.

What does not

Did not test faction editor or map editor.  Was not able to play beyond five turns.  Sound does not work in this game.  It causes crashes, so it is best to turn it off.

What was not tested

Faction editor, map editor, multiplayer.

Additional Comments

I used winetricks to make this game playable. Before I installed the game from the SMACPP CD, I ran winetricks and selected: Run OSS Sound, enable virtual desktop set size to 1024x768, set Windows version to Win2000, and set MouseWarpOverride to disable. I installed the game by opening up the file browser and right clicking on the setup.exe file and running it with wine program loader. After it installed, it gave me an error about my CPU not being supported. This is common for later processors, because when this game was made, a 586 Pentium was the latest processor, so I just click OK and the game exited. Then I had to go into the Alpha Centauri.ini file that it had just populated and change the ForceOldVoxAlgorithim to 1. If it is a 0, then set it to 1. If it is a 1, then set it to 0. This is an issue even in Windows. Then I ran the game through the Wine drop menu again and it played the opening movie. I just pressed enter to skip through it and it brought up the initial menu. I cycled through the options to start up a new game. It did fine for a few turns, but then crashed for no given reason. I managed to save a game at one point and go back to it. Finally, it did give me an error message about wine having issues with the terranx.icd file. I don't know what this means. I didn't even know this file existed in the game, but it was a Wine generated error message. Maybe this game runs better with other versions of Linux. I finally did get a game working, but it was very slow as well. I don't know how to implement a DIB engine, but I didn't think that you have to with this latest version of wine.
