What works

  • Actual gameplay

What does not

  • Installer displays some error messages at the end, but the game still installs successfully
  • Fonts are rendered without anti-aliasing and without hinting, so they look lumpy and ugly (see bug 41639)
  • Game only supports low, 4:3 full-screen resolutions
  • Sometimes the sound-effects or music get "stuck" in a four or five second loop forever
  • Sometimes the game doesn't shut down cleanly, requiring a force-quit

Workarounds

  • To enable hinting for the game's user-interface fonts, set the following environment variable before starting the game:
    FREETYPE_PROPERTIES=truetype:interpreter-version=35
  • Add KeepRes=1 to the bottom of the file conquests.ini to make the game use your desktop resolution, whatever it is

I tried the all ways to make game stable, but it still has sound issues and crashes. The best working solution for me is VirtualBox + Windows XP + Civilization III.
