What works

Game works in deskstop mode with the option -interline.

wine "/home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Abe's Oddysee/AbeWin.exe" -interline

This will give you non interlined video and gameplay.

When run without WINE Desktop mode on (ie: full screen) interline mode will be apparent.

Read the README file that was installed with game for more detail.

What does not

Controller may not map correctly even after setting it up in the game.

Non-interline modes still give you choppy in-game video.

Additional Comments

This game does work when you add the -interline argument to the AbeWin.exe program. I'd give this gold status as you do have to input additional settings to get it to work.

High resolution with DDraw hack & legal No-CD trick for Oddworld games
by Pekka Helenius on Tuesday February 10th 2015, 7:23
1) Create an empty wineprefix for Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee & Abe's Exoddus (recommended) by executing in terminal:

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine_oddworld/ WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

2) Install both the games using correct setup.exe paths:

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine_oddworld/ wine

3) In order to play the games without CD and with all movies still presented, copy all .DDV & .ddv files into the game main folder (do not use subfolders)

4) Download DirectDraw override hack by Jari Komppa:

5) Extract all files into the main game directories.

6) Open Wine configuration tool (winecfg):

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine_oddworld/ winecfg

and use the following settings:
Libraries: ddraw (native)

NOTE: Yes, you get warning about unrecommended setting and questions like "Are you really sure you want to do this, this can destroy your Wine installation????". Click yes. We need ddraw native override to get DirectDraw hack working for Oddworld games. This ddraw override is completetely specific for them and it won't affect on your other Wine apps in any scale. This is because the games are under a new wineprefix and there are no other applications installed into it.

If you want to play the Oddworld games in a windowed mode, click also Graphics tab in winecfg and enable "Emulate a virtual desktop" feature.

Both games will crash when you exit them. To disable annoying (and in this case, irrelevant) GUI crash dialog, see official Wine wiki:

You likely get blue/purple/green flashes between video clips but, otherwise, the ddraw stuff works pretty flawlessly.

If, in any case, you use PlayOnLinux, you can disable errors and debug messages by editing Oddworld shortcuts ($HOME/.PlayOnLinux/shortcuts/myoddworldgame). Use the following example as a reference:

export POL_IgnoreWineErrors=True
cd "/home/fincer//.PlayOnLinux//wineprefix/oddworld/drive_c/./Program Files/Abe's Oddysee"
POL_Wine AbeWin.exe "$@"
[ "$WINEDEBUG" = "-all" ] && exit 0

(ignore "cd..." and "POL_Wine..." lines. The "export..." line and the last line are only relevant lines here!)

Well, Appdb didn't show correctly the second step command. It should read:

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine_oddworld/ wine pathtooddworldsetup.exe
Cutscene Videos do not work in v1.1.23
by Dominic Ferraro on Wednesday June 10th 2009, 0:16
The cutscene videos do not work "properly" in WINE version 1.1.23. The -interline command line option allows you to play the videos, but the video is very dark, even during gameplay. The interline really affects the game experience in a negative way, so it would be great if this were fixed. Gameplay would be much more satisfying if the interline were only enabled during cutscenes, but it would be best if the actual problem was fixed.

I wonder if this problem happens on lots of old Windows 98 games..?

The really atmospheric videos won't work on my machine. They are awfully slow, interlaced and only about one frame per second is shown (the others skipped). Anybody got a solution for this?

Sorry, just found the solution with the -interline mode. Works fine, except for leaving the game at half brightness since half of the screen is omitted.

When running this game. Keyboard input is ignored in full screen mode until mouse is clicked. Keyboard input is ignored in windowed mode until mouse has entered window. But if I disable the 'Allow the window manager to control the windows' option in winecfg, keyboard input works.
