Additional Comments
I was unable to make the game run in fullscreen. With the virtual desktop everything is OK, the game even knows and works in all the resolutions available in my xorg.conf (including 1280x800) - but it's of no use. The game's huge 3D accelerated window sticks out beyond the screen and cannot be moved with a mouse to the upper-left corner, because the cursor is grabbed by the game, and Alt-Tab makes the whole window turn black unreversibly. Thus I am left with 800x600 which is not bad anyway. With wine's virtual desktop turned off the game just shows an error saying it cannot start hardware accelerated DirectX 8, then exits. The console says xrandr extension was unable to change screen depth from 32 bpp to 16 bpp.

I needed to set WINEDEBUG="-all" to get this game past the initial Activision bink movie. The installer, and updater (1.2) both worked fine after setting Windows Version to "Windows 98" in winecfg.
After loading, the main menu (pre-game) is very jerky (2 fps perhaps). Once in game, the fps is very smooth (smoother than this game runs under Windows XP actually - no stutter!).
The shadows and other transparent textures seem to be misaligned, and the sound is a bit poppy, but other than that, most things seem to work pretty well.
It might be worth checking out the 1.3 patch at some point. www.visi.com/~nathan/bz2/bz2_13.html
