yWriter

yWriter is a word processor which breaks your novel into chapters and scenes, helping you keep track of your work while leaving your mind free to create. It will not write your novel for you, suggest plot ideas or perform creative tasks of any kind. yWriter was designed by an author, not a salesman!

What works

Installer (.exe), see What was not Tested. The Installer will yell at you if it does not detect Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or above. See *Workarounds*.
After performing the Workaround -- See Workarounds -- everything tested works as expected. Creating/editing chapters, using the 'New Project Wizard,' and changing fonts, among other things, works well.

The official instructions from the Linux download page also works (using mono). (Read Additional Comments [1])

What does not

Operating the program using mono from the Terminal. (Read Additional Comments [1])

Workarounds

You will need Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5+

I suggest you follow this link: https://appdb.winehq.org/objec...

This will send you to the instructions for installing .NET Framework 4.*.

I have successfully installed .NET Framework 4.5.2 and yWriter 6 has no more complaints. If you're still having issues, make sure that your Wine Config marks yWriter6.exe needing the mscoree.dll library natively.

What was not tested

The .zip package was not tested, but assumes to follow the same parameters for the full installer.

Scheduled check for Updates.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

[1] - The Linux-based instructions on the download page (www.spacejock.com/yWriter6_Dow... ) instruct you to use mono-complete (mono-basic and mono-core if running Fedora) to run the executable. I've found that using mono is very slow and inconvenient, freezing and not responding requiring a kill -9 command to close.

There was some Aliasing with certain fonts on popup windows/dialogs, but it's entirely possible my Wine setup set something wrong. Mileage may vary.
