What works

Logging in with an existing character

What does not

Some videos will just output a black screen (right before the login-screen as well as before the character creation).

Low performance as well as incorrect rendering in actual gameplay with wined3d.

Wine-staging is required for now to be able to login through the launcher.

DXVK can be used instead of wined3d to fix incorrect rendering and low performance during actual gameplay.

What was not tested

Logging in with a fresh account with no character already created, and waiting as long as the intro video lasts before the character creation step.

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

To work, the launcher requires .NET Framework 4.5.2 or newer. I was only able to get the launcher to work with 4.7.1 myself.
Here's a quick guide to get there :

Let's make a fresh prefix :
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wineboot --init

We need to remove mono if it's installed :
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wine uninstaller --remove '{E45D8920-A758-4088-B6C6-31DBB276992E}'
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wine64 uninstaller --remove '{E45D8920-A758-4088-B6C6-31DBB276992E}'

We have to switch to winxp to get .NET Framework 4.0 installed (required for newer .NET Framework installation to work on wine) :
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless winecfg

We can now download and install .NET Framework 4.0 :
wget ''
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wine dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe /q && WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wineserver -k

We now need to switch to win7 and set mscoree.dll as native in the dll overrides for .NET Framework 4.7.1 installer to work :
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless winecfg

We can finally download and install .NET Framework 4.7.1 :
wget ''
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wine NDP471-KB4033342-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe /q && WINEPREFIX=~/.wine/Dauntless wineserver -k

You may need to install corefonts and gdiplus through winetricks if the launcher renders incorrectly !
If your launcher crashes or fails to connect, make sure ipv6 support is not disabled in your kernel/grub configuration.

Some additional dll overrides than can help :

d3dcompiler_47 (native, builtin)
nvapi (disabled)

Use winetricks for dotnet452

You can install dotnet >= 4.5.2 through winetricks since 2017, I'd recommend using it over deleting mono and installing it manually.

Using 396.45 nvidia driver version

Hi, decent performance using Vulkan, however in town performance is bad. During hunts it's mostly fine, 60fps+ (but I usually play this game in low settings).

Need to unmark CSMT on staging settings.
