What works

After doing everything listed below at the workarounds, the game runs pretty well. No visual artifacts, no audio glitches and the videos have no problems either. The widescreen patch works flawlessly too, provided you follow it's instructions carefully.

What does not

  • The game fails to start out-of-box. See workarounds below.
  • The performance is a bit poor, especially outdoors. Has a workaround, but it still seems to be worse than on Windows.
  • Playing on a 64-bit prefix. Winetricks fails to install Windows Media Player on a 64-bit prefix.

  • Installing quartz.dll, devenum.dll and both Windows Media Player 9 and 10 along with their codec packs will fix the crash at the startup and allows you to see videos.
    winetricks quartz devenum wmp9 wmp10

  • Completely disabling anti-alias has dramatically increased framerate and fixed the performance issues for me. The game now runs at a stable and high framerate without any major hiccups. If you still have problems, disabling extra effects, such as bumpmapping and reflections, and enabling frame-sync in the 'config.ini' can also help a lot.

What was not tested

Playing for more than 3 hours and the Devotress' story, as it requires completing the game first.

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

  • The game may forget to reset the gamma level after quitting, leaving your screen unusually bright and white. You can reset it manually by typing "xgamma -gamma 1.0".
  • I had to install both 'wmp9' and 'wmp10' to successfully run the game. Installing only 'wmp9' led to a lock-up during launch and 'wmp10' requires 'wmp9' to be installed first. amstream.dll, as mentioned in a previous test, didn't do the trick for me and led to gstreamer related errors.
