What works

Graphics, messaging, 'night mode', systray notifications. Application is totally useable for text messaging.

What does not

The app is surrounded by an ugly black border. This border appears on all desktops, even when the app doesn't. 

Workarounds

Work around was to turn off 'allow  window manager to control the windows' and also 'allow window manager to decorate the windows'. Without these options the window manager (in my case blackbox) could minimize the app, or send it to another workspace, leaving an empty black border behind on all screens. With these options turned off the app manages it's own window in a manner which was at least consistent.
