What works

All features in the game game run (sound, video, free play, settings).

What does not

Out of the box, it runs but with very high CPU usage that causes black screen flashing that makes the game unplayable.

Workarounds

Installed and ran cnc-ddraw into "C/GOG Games/SimCity 3000 Unlimted/Apps". Running with VSync and maintain aspect ratio after forcing a DLL override for ddraw (I typed in manually and confirmed on winecfg). Prior to change was running at 100% single core and after down to about 30%. Fix was very fast to add but it didn't work correctly out of the box. That said, had to stick to a (still acceptable) 1024x768 with 30 ticks max in cnc-ddraw.

Additional Comments

Installing on Pop was a little tricky and could not use the Pop Shop. You can follow instructions at https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu using the instructions for Jammy. Specifically tested on Lemur Pro.

Issues with SimCity 3000 on Linux with Wine
by Vamp898 on Thursday April 22nd 2021, 8:40
The Issues mentioned here (like too fast scrolling and UFO stuck on Screen) also happen the exact same way on Windows 10.

In Addition, on Windows 10, there is no sound via HDMI which works on Linux. So i'd give this game an Platinum Rating as it works better as on Windows
