What works

Everything except multiplayer.

What does not

Multiplayer does not work. Clicking create/join game immediately kicks the player back to the main menu. This is the same for both LAN or internet (direct IP) games.

Others have suggested winetricks directplay as a workaround, but this didn't work either. Creating or joining a network game hangs indefinitely on the loading screen. The screen says to "press ESC after 15 seconds" if creating or joining fails, but this does nothing. I left the game on this screen for approximately 10 minutes to grab a coffee and it was still on the screen when I came back.

Workarounds

You need to enable Emulate a virtual desktop in winecfg, otherwise the game crashes at startup. The downside is, unfortunately, the game will run in a fixed window size.

You can, however, mitigate this using the the community-made All-in-One patch, which has an integrated widescreen fix:

  1. Install the game as normal.
  2. Install the All-in-One patch.
  3. Run LaunchGB.exe from the game directory.
  4. Click Clone Campaigns -> Widescreen -> Enable to apply the patch.
  5. Run .\Game\battlegrounds_cc.exe directly to start the game (starting the game through the launcher doesn't seem to work).
  6. Select 1280x1024 in-game to use your new resolution.

I was able to play the game at 1920x1080 resolution without issue. The main menus are always 800x600, but in-game will scale up to 1920x1080. I moved the window to the very top-left corner of my monitor so when it expanded it filled the screen.

What was not tested

The Zone.com multiplayer functionality as I'm pretty sure this has been obsolete since 2006.

Updated multiplayer results for Wine 8.0.1 on Ubuntu 20
by telmarine on Thursday June 15th 2023, 23:42
I wanted to post some updates in regards to multiplayer. Multiplayer does appear to be working in Wine 8.0.1. The tests I did were between a Windows 10 machine and a Linux machine running wine on the same local network:

Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS
Wine 8.0.1
32-bit prefix

The following scenarios worked:

1. Windows machine hosting an Internet TCP/IP game, Linux machine able to see and join via Internet TCP/IP
2. Windows machine hosting a LAN TCP/IP game, Linux machine able to see and join LAN TCP/IP
3. Linux machine hosting an Internet TCP/IP game, Windows machine able to see and join via Internet TCP/IP
4. Linux machine hosting a LAN TCP/IP game, Windows machine joining by specifying the IP via Internet TCP/IP "Show games" option. The Linux hosted LAN game didn't seem to automatically show up for the Windows machine when using the Join LAN option, but worked when specifying the IP. This could be due to local settings on the machine.

These tests did NOT go through a full game to see if desyncs or disconnects happen. A game was able to be started in each instance without issue, however.

Additional wine settings I forgot to mention:

- Emulate a virtual desktop turned on
- Directplay installed via winetricks
