What works

Basically everything except:

What does not

- Bethesda Launcher to download the game

- Ingame Store (Atom Store)

Workarounds

I installed wine-staging-protonified 3.21 (Lutris) with DXVK 0.93 and e-sync enabled.

In addition, I added

corefonts, xact, vcrun2015

In winecfg, I set xaudio2_7 to native, builtin and winegstreamer to disabled.

Nvidia is the beta driver: 396.54.09

Reddish glow of all things in game

In C:\users\$USER\My Documents\My Games\Fallout76.ini set

bEnableEnlighten= 0

NoRegionPing Error

vcrun2015 should fix that

Micro Freezes

If you experience 5-10 seconds long freezes of the game every 30 seconds, its related to Fallout 76 game engine and its VSync. Go to:

C:\users\$USER\My Documents\My Games\Fallout76Prefs.ini

and set iPresentInterval = 0

this disables VSync (working now since the framerate got decoupled from the physics in Fallout)

What was not tested

Tested the thing for about 10 hours of gameplay and I found no issues so far, except for the Atom Store and the launcher.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

You can actually play it and I rate the quality to Gold cause it overall loads a bit faster than on Windows (I recommend a SSD, loading times take a while) and the graphics are perfect. I play on 1080p, max settings and 80 fps on a Laptop; so on a good rig you easily get the 100 fps. It is really amazing what DXVK can do and you forget really fast that you are actually playing the game on a POSIX-like system. :)

Only downside is the bethesda store, I didnt get it to ever function. I can start it and initialize the Fallout download but then it gives me an error. Good thing is you just need the downloaded games folder, without ever using the store, you directly can launch the Fallout76.exe from there. So you just need a machine at hand to download the 50 GB and need to update the install with every patch (which probably will happen for some time, since the game is buggy).

Installing via Launcher
by Han Prower on Wednesday January 16th 2019, 21:05
In regards to not being able to install via the Launcher I found out that if you go to the Launcher's folder in your prefix and rename cdpprod.dch.tmp to cdpprod.dch it gets past the detection error and downloads correctly.

Not sure why the Launcher fails to move the files correctly itself. There are a few .tmp files that get stuck.

The atom store also works for me, which may be related to the same file as above. It might not think you have a proper copy somehow so blocks the store?
Audio issues still
by Jarrard on Saturday December 29th 2018, 15:15
Just wondering what else is needed for audio to work? I installed xact via winetricks but only get the intro video audio, the menu and game is silent.

Any thoughts? I have made sure all the xaudio2_x is set to native, builtin.

Nothing I have tried gets ingame/menu audio fx working. The game is running pretty good at 4k and medium settings, so close...

Must be some issue with my OMNI 5.1 USB sound card, every other game works fine via proton and dxvk, just FO76 that has issues, maybe it needs a custom dsound patch.

Going to need to wait this one out until more people get this audio issue because I can't resolve it on my own.

Installed ming and compiled FAudio, it installed correctly but loads of these below.

Basically it can't find the local library, I know there is a way to include them with a variable but I can't remember, VERY rusty atm. The DLL files are all located in my /usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32/bin/ folder.

50 symlinks later and FAudio is working and all sound, (testing still required). Can't believe that symlink spamming worked LOL.
