What works

Everything!

Pro tip: Copy your keyboard bindings from Windows: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\Custom.3.0.binds

Didn't really test all. But I tested: station services, supercruise, combat, galaxy map, system map.

What does not

Some tricks needed for installation. But if you know what to do, it's no problem.

Workarounds

Basic installation guide:

Changes needed for 3.3:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/...

How it worked for me

PC: AMD Phenom II, 12 GB RAM, Radeon RX 500
OS: openSUSE-15.0
Wine (didn't test without staging or nine, but will probably also work): wine-staging-nine-4.0~rc3 -> https://download.opensuse.org/...
Wine-Build: https://build.opensuse.org/pac...
Winetricks: 2018-12-03 -> https://raw.githubusercontent....

Elite Dangerous: Installed downloaded at 2018-12-23 -> https://hosting.zaonce.net/eli... (has certificate error if with SSL)

Installation:
WINEARCH=win64 WINE=/usr/bin/wine64 winetricks dotnet452 corefonts vcrun2015 dxvk
WINEARCH=win64 WINE=/usr/bin/wine64 winetricks win7
WINEARCH=win64 wine64 "C:\\EliteDangerous-Client-Installer.exe"
WINEARCH=win64 wine64 "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Frontier\\EDLaunch\\EDLaunch.exe"

What was not tested

nothing essential

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

Performance is a pretty similar to Windows. (sometimes the game seems hang for a few milliseconds)

Pro tip: Copy your keyboard bindings from Windows.

Garbage rating???
by Josh R Raymond on Tuesday November 19th 2019, 18:44
Why's it have a garbage rating, if people are reporting the game works fine...?
RE: Garbage rating???
by Aaron Franke on Wednesday November 20th 2019, 19:11
The rating reflects how it runs in vanilla Wine. Test results are welcome to show that they got it working with third-party tools, but the rating must reflect how it runs in vanilla Wine without third-party tools. Since Elite: Dangerous doesn't work without DXVK, it gets a garbage rating.

If you want to see the rating including such third-party tools, see ProtonDB instead.

Is there any Wine AppDB documentation defining which third-party tools make a game garbage?
What about a program requiring to install corefonts or dotnet via Winetricks? Would that make it garbage too?

I find this categorization really unhelpful. Elite Dangerous runs great for years. And I don't see big efforts to fix the D3D problems inside WineD3D. So it'll probably stay with DXVK for many more years.

I agree with you but this is WineHQ's policy. They refuse to consider DXVK a part of the Wine project because it is written in C++, while Wine exclusively uses C.
3.3.02 update and more links
by kolAflash on Sunday January 20th 2019, 4:48
Still Silver on openSUSE-15.0 with Elite Dangerous version 3.3.02.

Wine has been updated on my system to version: wine-staging-nine-4.0~rc6
And I also recently updated my DXVK to version 0.95, using: WINEARCH=win64 WINE=/usr/bin/wine64 winetricks --force dxvk
github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases
raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks

Actually I already played a lot Elite Dangerous trough Wine in the last weeks. Sometimes little things don't work. But nothing which keeps me from playing and having fun.

hints and workarounds
by kolAflash on Thursday September 6th 2018, 16:15
Found some hints here:
lutris.net/games/elite-dangerous/
lutris.net/games/install/9190/view

My current status of workarounds to get the game to load up to 19%.
winetricks dotnet40
winetricks win7
winetricks dsound
winetricks dxvk-0.71/setup_dxvk.verb # from: github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

Launcher works and installs the game (current version as of 2019-09-06 - probably version 3.2.1). But the game crashes on the loading screen at 19% (graphics totally hand - PC still accessible via SSH).

Notes on DX11 support
by EoD on Wednesday November 2nd 2016, 15:31
I managed to start (not play!) EliteDangerous64.exe ( EliteDangerous/Products/elite-dangerous-64/total/EliteDangerous64.exe )

I required to work around the missing DX11 support, following the advice from: www.gearsongallium.com/?p=2875

Apart form that, I did not manage to get EDLaunch.exe to start.
