Additional Comments

EDLaunch needs .NET 4 installed via winetricks. The game must be started from EDLaunch, "wine EliteDangerous32.exe" will not work. "ps" reveals that the EDLaunch starts the game like this; "EliteDangerous32.exe wseed [seed] ServerToken [token] /language English\\UK" So you need to know the seed and server token. Frontier Store version: - make a clean 32bit prefix - $ winetricks dotnet40 corefonts - $ wine EliteDangerous-Client-Installer.exe - $ wine EDLaunch.exe - And click "Install" But the installation always fails when the progress bar is almost at the end. I couldn't try the alternative download method, that is supposed to be in the options, since the options UI does not work, and I don't known how to enable it manually. So I took the Steam key from Frontier Store and installed the game from Steam instead. Steam version: - make a clean 32bit prefix - install Steam, and install the game - $ winetricks dotnet40 corefonts - $ wine EDLaunch.exe - press "Play" But the game crashes after; err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {8670c736-f614-427b-8ada-bbadc587194b} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {8670c736-f614-427b-8ada-bbadc587194b} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {8670c736-f614-427b-8ada-bbadc587194b} could be created for context 0x3 err:quartz:GetClassMediaFile Media class not found and it throws a message box "Parameter is not valid." I tried installing windowscodecs, allcodecs, quartz etc with winetricks, but the crash and error message remains.

Garbage rating???
by Josh R Raymond on Tuesday November 19th 2019, 18:44
Why's it have a garbage rating, if people are reporting the game works fine...?
RE: Garbage rating???
by Aaron Franke on Wednesday November 20th 2019, 19:11
The rating reflects how it runs in vanilla Wine. Test results are welcome to show that they got it working with third-party tools, but the rating must reflect how it runs in vanilla Wine without third-party tools. Since Elite: Dangerous doesn't work without DXVK, it gets a garbage rating.

If you want to see the rating including such third-party tools, see ProtonDB instead.
3.3.02 update and more links
by kolAflash on Sunday January 20th 2019, 4:48
Still Silver on openSUSE-15.0 with Elite Dangerous version 3.3.02.

Wine has been updated on my system to version: wine-staging-nine-4.0~rc6
And I also recently updated my DXVK to version 0.95, using: WINEARCH=win64 WINE=/usr/bin/wine64 winetricks --force dxvk

Actually I already played a lot Elite Dangerous trough Wine in the last weeks. Sometimes little things don't work. But nothing which keeps me from playing and having fun.

hints and workarounds

Found some hints here:

My current status of workarounds to get the game to load up to 19%.
winetricks dotnet40
winetricks win7
winetricks dsound
winetricks dxvk-0.71/setup_dxvk.verb # from:

Launcher works and installs the game (current version as of 2019-09-06 - probably version 3.2.1). But the game crashes on the loading screen at 19% (graphics totally hand - PC still accessible via SSH).

Notes on DX11 support
by EoD on Wednesday November 2nd 2016, 15:31
I managed to start (not play!) EliteDangerous64.exe ( EliteDangerous/Products/elite-dangerous-64/total/EliteDangerous64.exe )

I required to work around the missing DX11 support, following the advice from:

Apart form that, I did not manage to get EDLaunch.exe to start.
