  • Skirmish
  • Save/load

What does not

Recent Origin client only works for XP version, need to use the 'legacy' client version.

Additional Comments

Setup steps:

  1. Use 32-bit WINEPREFIX, with the Windows version set to Windows XP:
    winetricks winxp
  2. Use these dll overrides:
    winetricks dotnet35sp1 corefonts
  3. Uncheck "run at Windows startup" and "check for updates automatically" in the installer.
  4. Run Origin, login, download and install the game.
  5. Run the game.
The game Launcher window will appear. Enter the EA login credentials, login again. Then add/select persona and click Play button underneath.

And with Windows 7/10 emulation I did not needed to do all that:
winetricks gdiplus windowscodecs corefonts
Also there is no need to bother your self with dumb launcher, all you need is to run "Command and Conquer 4\\Data\\CNC4.game" -config "C:\\Command and Conquer 4\\CNC4_English.SkuDef" while in "Command and Conquer 4", marking CNC4.game to be executable and replacing "Command and Conquer 4" with actual path where the game is installed in your prefix.

This does not work as well for the Origin version: it always redirects to the launcher even if run the game via commandline you have suggested. I have tried this way for retail version and it works there, but for Origin version it always tries to open the launcher, making it the only way to deal with it.

Are you sure you tried this with Origin version?

Yes, I'm sure I use Origin version, one thing I forgot to mention is I use staging version of Wine. And game asks me to login, I do not know if this is what you refer to as a launcher it looks like this: i.imgur.com/ENIFIDn.png

This is exactly what I have seen when using non-Origin (DVD retail) version: it launches via commandline and then prompts login credentials in the game.

Could be that non-legacy version allows skipping the launcher, however I am not able to check that due to not being able to install it. I would be grateful if the how-to steps will be provided for clean wine prefix.

Oh man! I forgot! Damn, it become almost autonomous process for Me for each new WinePrefix!
Nor the game nor the installer of Origin will work right without Vulkan+DXVK!

I am really sorry not pointing it earlier, it's become absolute "normality" for Me at this point.
This is wrong: Origin client only works for XP version

Origin is perfectly working wine Windows 7 and/or Windows 10 emulation!
The only reason why you MAY need Windows XP emulation is to install .NET 3.5 SP1 but!:
winetricks dotnet35sp1
Do this for you any way and after .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed you can switch back to Win7/10 and use not legacy Origin.
Simplest sequence is:
1. Create new wine prefix.
2. winetricks dotnet35sp1
3. winetricks win7
4. install Origin
5. install Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight using Origin
6. Play!

Origin installer for Windows 7 simply crashes repeatedly on launch due to bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32342 bug, so your steps are not relevant. Of course I have tried that first, but after this problem I have found a solution to fallback to legacy version.

Have you missed something?

I know of that bug as it affects a lot of programs/games and as soon as I spotted it I made My self a "Fonts" directory and just soft-link it to each WinePrefix I create, I actually have a template for WinePrefix, there isn't much in there these days as most of things there was is meant to fix some inconveniences in Wine and was since fixed in Wine, also I use staging version of Wine, this should not affect this bug as it stated in discussion of that bug that wine-staging have no effect on it.

That could be the thing, that you have already performed some steps. I have nailed down steps for clean wine prefix.

Some addition here: I was able to move further with `winetricks corefonts` (the repeated crash went away), but then I got into another issue - bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44691. Install aborts with that error and not possible to move further.
