What works

  • Installing through Bethesda.net Launcher;
  • Launching the game directly without running the launcher;
  • Login with Bethesda.net account;
  • Creating a new character;
  • Opening and intro videos;
  • Main menu;
  • Loading a saved character (with workaround; see notes);
  • Overall graphics, audio and gameplay in Adventure mode (level 1 to 8);
  • Performance is acceptable but the see-through ground bug probably make it lower than it could.

What does not

  • The landscape ground is fully transparent. Everything is suspended over a whiteish void. You can see parts of objects that should be underground, and through the mountains. Depending on the rendering distance, this may affect performance. You have to guess the ground level by looking at the things around you, but in clear areas it is sometime hard to figure the different ground height and you may be blocked by an invisible cliff or fall from it. Water areas are not visible meaning that you can inadvertently walk into radioactive water. (Reported as bug 50062)
  • Taking pictures in-game is broken. The game doesn't crash, but the images are nowhere to be found on disk. There are PNG thumbnails in the 'My documents/My Photos/Fallout76/Photos' directory but they are empty (0x0 pixel size).

Workarounds

  1. The game requires xd3daudio1_7.dll which is currently not implemented in vanilla Wine. wine-staging has a patch for it but I didn't try that. Using winetricks xact_x64 worked around the issue. FAudio was not required.
  2. There are some rendering issues that can be fixed with a configuration file (Grass is rendered like opaque walls; Lighting and colors are wrong).
  3. There is also an issue with the mouse (jumping around randomly) that is fixed in the same configuration file.

Here are the configuration file I used:

[Controls]
bBackgroundMouse=1
[Grass]
iMinGrassSize=80
bAllowCreateGrass=0
[Enlighten]
bEnableEnlighten=0

The file goes in 'My documents/My Games/Fallout76/Fallout76Custom.ini'.

Lutris has a sample configuration file with other settings but I didn't need them.

My GPU is Nvidia RTX 2070, with proprietary driver 450.66.

What was not tested

  • Atom shop;
  • Alternate gameplay modes (nuclear winter; private worlds);
  • Anything beyond level 8 and The Wayward - Flatwood areas;
  • Push to talk and Social stuff;
  • Updating the game;
  • Mods.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

winetricks corefonts was used for the Bethesda.net Launcher to function properly.
The game installs without issue. I didn't have to use any helper script.

It's not possible to load a saved character right after starting the game. It crash after loading the world. This is an application bug. The workaround is to create a new character first. You just have to pass the video, accept the random appearance and quit the ID photo mode, then you can return to the main menu and load the saved character. It has to be done each time you launch the game and it'll affect any saved character, so there is no point in saving the new character.

Sometimes, the loaded character will inherit facial hair and haircut from the last created character of the workaround. It may be cleared by opening the appearance interface, switching anything on, then off, and validating. This will reload the saved character appearance. At least it did for me. This glitch is present on Windows too.
