Can't make it work
by NM31 on Sunday August 30th 2020, 4:36
I have followed the instrutions carefully but I still get stuck at 58%. I am using Wine 5.11 as stated. The error in the terminal that repeat "indefinitely" is "wine Failed to create custom action client pipe: 231" (among other things) and I cannot figure it out. If you have any tips on that, it would be great.
Thanks!
Still can't install
by Mike Freeman on Wednesday August 19th 2020, 14:08
I'm still trying to install Office 365, and no matter what I do, no matter what instructions I follow, I can't get the installer past the 58% mark. I've installed the msxml 6 and riched 20 dll's through winetricks into the 32-bit prefix. I've edited the registry with the new registry DWORD's, as mentioned in this and other instructions. I've tried the installer from office.com, I've tried the installer from a CD-ROM img file I found somewhere on Microsoft's website, I've tried installers I've found going through various other routes through Microsoft's website, and all of them stop at 58%.

I've GOT to be doing something wrong. What's your secret to doing this correctly?!

I'm supposed to be using locally-installed (i.e. not the web version) MS Office in a class I'm taking. I get Office 365 for free through the college. LibreOffice won't do for this class, since part of it is specifically about doing things in MS Office. My computer only has Linux installed, doesn't have enough drive space to split it and create a dual-boot system, and isn't high-spec'd enough to usably run a VM. So this is my only option. Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks!

As a temporal solution, maybe can you use Office online? meanwhile you could find a fix. Or you can try another version of office (i.e 2013).

Office 2013 is full compatible with 365 and has gold and silver ratings in Wine appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=26323

Bye

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the teacher states in the syllabus that it MUST be the installed, offline MS Office 2019. I was hopeful when I saw a few people have done it using wine. I'm just wishing I could figure out how that was accomplished.

Check this out: appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=33762 it is for office 2016, but could apply for your problem. Also, check which environment are you using (32 or 64bits).
RE: Still can't install

Well, I figured out the problem. I wasn't using the right version of wine. I was using 5.15-staging, and the post uses 5.11. When I switched to 5.11, the installer finished. After I finished the installation and doing all the adjustments in the above instructions, it all works. And once the installation is done, I can switch back to 5.15-staging and it still works. So apparently, newer versions of wine have problems with the installer program. I tried all programs, and other than the ones I have to sign it for (like Outlook), it all seems to work almost flawlessly! If we could figure out how to fix the sign-in issue, then I think we'd be able to move this up to gold or even platinum level!

Thank you for your help! This is exactly what I needed for my class!

So, experimenting with it, the only problems with running Office 365/2019 in wine are sign-ins (as stated in other reports), some very minor visual glitches (such as momentary black boxes as the UI is being formed, a weird white border around the window that I don't think is there in actual Windows, no UI animations which are present in actual Windows, some UI fonts not anti-aliasing even with wine's anti-aliasing flags set, etc.), and wineserver crashes when it exists, leaving all sorts of .exe zombie processes to have to kill. But these are fairly minor annoyances and not show stoppers at all. Otherwise, it seems to all work great!
Can't Install
by Mike Freeman on Monday August 10th 2020, 2:44
Trying to install Office 2019, using the above instructions, but failing.

How do you add the registry values in these steps:

2. Add to registry DWORD "HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct2D/max_version_factory" with value "0"
3. Add to registry DWORD "HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D/MaxVersionGL" with value "30002" (hexadecimal)

In my wine registry in a new 32-bit prefix, I do not have a Direct2D or Direct3D tree under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine.

I can try to follow the rest of the steps, but the installer always crashes at 58%.

I can, however create shortcuts to the various programs (i.e. Word, etc.), but when run, I get a box saying that Office is being updated, for about a minute, and then it crashes.

System is Linux Mint 20, running Wine Staging 5.13.

You can do it using winetricks, it has an option to edit the registry: you have to create the Direct3D tree (new key option) and then, inside it create the DWORD (HEX): "MaxVersionGL" with value 30002:

Check (also with winetricks) that you have installed MSXML 6.0, if not go to "Install Windows DLL components" and find it there.
RE: Can't Install
by Mike Freeman on Monday August 10th 2020, 10:41
Thank you! I was able to create the registry entries. I did have the MSXML6 and Riched20 installed through winetricks before. I just somehow missed the ability to add a non-existent key to the registry.

Unfortunately, the results are the same. I cannot get any part of MS Office to run. It either crashes right away, or gives me a message about "Updating Office" for a while, and then crashing. So I'm not sure how David Garfias was able to get it working. Perhaps something has been changed in the installer since then.
