The game by default starts with 640x480x16 resolution in full screen and will bail with a DriectX 8.0 initialization error if that video mode is not available on the target system. It is believed that similiar issues would have been encountered in modern Windows environments. As a workaround temporarily enable WINE's virtual desktop feature and change the resolution in the settings (up to 1280x1024x32 in windowed or fullscreen mode supported).
