What works

All demodulation modes RTL_SDR over TCP/IP loopback connection and IQ sample recording/playback using a WAV file.

What does not

USB capture mode does not work as this relies on a WinUSB driver. Some people have gotten USB mode working by compiling the software from source and using libusb. Also, performance is lower than using a Windows physical or virtual machine with the same laptop in my case. The audio is not affected, but the frame rate of the plots is reduced when the window is enlarged using the Nouveau driver on Intel HD 4600 mobile graphics.

Workarounds

Mono and Microsoft fonts need to be installed, as SDRSharp is written in C# and Microsoft .NET. Mono was installed when setting up the 32-bit Wine prefix, and the corefonts package was installed using Winetricks.

What was not tested

Other supported receivers, custom plugins, multiple VFOs for parallel demodulation, other minor features.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Intel
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

RTL_SDR is available for Linux by installing librtlsdr0 for the kernel module and rtl-sdr for the rtl_tcp utility. You will need to create a conf file and add the below lines to /etc/modprobe.d/no-rtl.conf to prevent the kernel from loading its own default modules:

blacklist dvb_usb_rtl28xxu
blacklist rtl2832
blacklist rtl2830
